Therein lies the problem / delicate balance of any teams progression. Hughes is getting closer and closer to needing to be in a 17 and starting as much as possible. Will his progress / development be impeded / restricted by Clubb?
We are lucky to be in a declining competition because IMO when you sign experienced established players they need to be able to 'run' and 'lead/develop' the younger players within the team. Recently, we have signed possibles / maybes / players who need fundamentals improving; Powell, Sarginson, Clubb. You start to run a great risk of tipping the balance too much particularly when you throw in losses of Pat, Sam, Tuson etc.
Clubb & Sarginson
Re: Clubb & Sarginson
The one thought I have Cherry is that the players may be rotated even more but that does become tricky if the core of the team is not fairly constant.
The way I see things youngster X may developed into world class player X because they have a RUGBY LEAGUE EDUCATION from a very early age and POTENTIAL. Players like Hughes, Burke nobody is sure how far they can go and we have to find out. You then throw in the likes of Connor Farrell (IIRC he is no longer eligible for U19s next season), Rob Lever, not your typical League ie Rhodri Lloyd etc etc.
The conveyor belt of production is never perfect but if it stalls then what happens Ben Austin, Grant Beecham, Nick Gregson, Ryan Sutton, Joe Bretherton and many more because sooner rather than later some will need snippets of carrot dangling to boost their development be it only a spot on the first grade bench once.
The biggest failing of British RL is that is stagnates / sometimes curtails the development of British youngsters whereas they sink / swim more in Aus / NZ.
Noone ignores the need for experience but what experience? Powell is an 'old' man with the experience of a St Pats junior. even the likes of Gil are relatively green in RL terms. What is the potential of such players? is that potential greater or worse than a young RL ingrained junior?
I always think you get more legendary League players from League juniors than Union players for example.
The odd part I find is Clubb has got an amazing contract length wise whereas Sarginson seems a skinny deal in comparison. I think Clubb has a hell of a lot to prove after publically waving the white flag and whining at his situation at London.

Re: Clubb & Sarginson
CP how much emphasis should be put on these players and their potential given that they've been playing in a losing team. Jamie Soward was a London player and if he'd signed for any other team, it would be big news and whilst he's improved them, he hasn't made the difference they were hoping.cpwigan wrote:The odd part I find is Clubb has got an amazing contract length wise whereas Sarginson seems a skinny deal in comparison. My point is that very very good players like Soward can't be the players that they want to be in a losing team and will never be able to fully express their ability. Clubb's attitude can, quite rightly, be questioned but I'm still optimistic that we may have two very solid players.

Re: Clubb & Sarginson
I thought Gower and Soward did well for London. I do think you can make an impact in such teams as Dixon has shown. I can remember Cowie and Hall playing for relegation fodder Rochdale BUT as you say Kiwi there is potential for these players to blossom, Billy McGinty was a good example. My worry is how many can we carry? There has to be a tipping point and we have absorbed successfully a great deal of transition so one can only hope.
The Clubb public whine as a club leader was a huge - IMO
Sport is such a fine line I daresay that is why it is so enthralling.

Sarginson as got plenty of potential IMO , And with the coaches Wigan have they can progress this development much more than London did
