World Club Challenge Confirmed
THE date and venue of the first World Club Challenge to be held on Australian soil in two decades have been confirmed - Saturday 22 February at Allianz Stadium.
The NRL is hoping to sellout the clash between Australian premiers Sydney Roosters and their Super League peers, Wigan Warriors, which will also be broadcast live on Channel Nine.
It's understood Wigan are planning to head Down Under two weeks in advance of the match and possibly play a lead-up game against Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby.
Despite being on home turf at Moore Park, the schedule also creates a tough dilemma for the Roosters - with the inaugural NRL Nines tournament to be staged in Auckland the previous weekend.
All NRL clubs are expected to field at least two marquee players, but most of the Roosters squad will have barely resumed pre-season training after their post-World Cup break.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

WIGAN have held talks about playing Papua New Guinea ahead of the World Club Challenge in Australia.
The Super League champions want to play a warm-up game before they meet Sydney Roosters in the annual showdown.
The WCC will take place on Allianz Stadium on Saturday February 22, according to reports Down Under.
And it’s thought a match against PNG in their capital, Port Moresby, could be on the cards a week earlier - on the same weekend when all NRL clubs are involved in the inaugural NRL Nines in Auckland.
Wigan today confirmed their first home game will be against Huddersfield. All Super League clubs were given permission to confirm their first fixture, ahead of the release of the full schedule on Monday.
The double-winners may bring their round one fixture forward to accommodate their tour Down Under.
Wigan famously won the WCC in Brisbane in 1994.

Re: World Club Challenge Confirmed
My mistake. Although, any warmup game would mean this would also be postponed. And Wigan have chosen not to announce this fixture quite yet.josie andrews wrote:First home game is 14th February v GiantsMike wrote:First home game on 21st Feb. WCC on 22nd Feb.

Re: World Club Challenge Confirmed
It does make playing sense to have a warm up game before the WCC, I doubt Huddersfield will think that though.

I'd give my right arm to see that game.josie andrews wrote:

What an occasion that would be.
As I am sure people know PNG is totally mad about the game. I reckon it would be an epic never to be forgotten fixture.
