Sad thing is Josie its not actually that daft the way the stupid playoff system is worked and the way the league is devalued - sometimes you are better off losing games, not saying that teams do on purpose but sometimes it works to your advantage

in the example hes putting forward losing could give us an easier tie in the match that actually matters

Its a no brainer we need momentum in my book but i dont think the question is a daft as it appears which in itself is a sad indicment of the way our game is run
What really annoys me is the fact that under the current system teams can throw games that suit them.Though they would not admit to throwing a game. And yet we as paying supporters have to hope and pray that some of these atrocious games played of late are just flukes in that the other team where better on the night than us and not a manufactured loss.Because if it was I would be hard pressed to part with my money.I have over the past month or so questioned if I was watching a team that could give a damn.Tonights game will be very interesting.

I understand what you are all saying re the bloody playoff system

Perhaps I'm naive enough to think that a club is honourable enough not to do something like that.
Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

I fail to see how a loss helps us.
Finishing 3rd, if we lose the first play off week, we are still in the competition with a home tie the following week.
Then we progress to back to an away tie with a shot of the GF if we win.
Win from third, and we have a week off, and a home tie to shoot for the GF with.

Finish 5rh, yes its a home tie first up, but then two away ties to reach the final.

Finishing 5th is easier for the first week only.
Look beyond the first week and its a lot harder from 5th.

Also, it will take a braver man than me to suggest to SW that he should engineer a loss, his reaction may not be just vocal :D

No!!! Why try and lose? It means you'd still have to play away in the playoffs at some point, week's 2&3, if you don't lose in round 1. Play away in week 1 and win, you get a home semi. Play home in week 1 and lose them we're out. I'd prefer a second chance (which, by the way, would be at home) to a home game that could see us knocked out.

Some people seem to hate the playoff system without ever bothering to understand it.

Also, if we don't win tonight we have no chance of finishing 2nd, something we can still do.

No, we need to be as high up as possible to maximise our chances of getting into the WCC series.

I guess it just highlights once again what a rubbish system is being used for the play offs. You are better off 5th than 3rd.

The old system 1st v 8th, 2nd v 7th and so on was much better. It wasn't broken and did not need fixing.

I suppose we are reaching the point in the season where that idiotic club call none sense is back in our lives too. Is that being abolished with the new format next season? I really hope it is.

:(
the system you describe was never used here but was used in the nrl. They complained about it constantly and it had some daft permutations so they adopted what we currently have. I don't agree with your premise anyway. If we win this week we'll be favourites next week. Should we win that we'll have a home game to reach old Trafford which we couldn't get if we finished fifth.

Club call is going though thank god

If we win, we will almost certainly finish 3rd, which means we will then have to play Cas or Stains away in the play offs.

If we lose, we could well end up finishing 5th (if Huddersfield do what we all want and beat Saints tomorrow).

5th will give us a home tie against Widnes or Catalan. So we're better off finishing 5th, aren't we?
Reckon you're spot on. Neither side will be crying should they lose tonight. It's just the fans who are short changed.

Having said that, I'm hoping for a game worthy of the occasion and reckon that we at least, will deliver.
