Are we better off losing tonight ?
Re: Are we better off losing tonight ?
Looks like we are planning to finish 5th after that sorry excuse for a first half. One try off the back of a penalty , one after dropping the ball in front of the sticks and courtesy the ref. Game over?

I think I am right 3rd is the lowest we can now finish so we have secured a WCC spot?
Re: Are we better off losing tonight ?
I see some people missed the question mark but never mind. Great comeback but we will need to do better than that to win the GF.
CPW not sure about the WCC spot. It depends what they mean by 3rd.
If you finished 8th but got to the GF and lost you technically finished second.
So who of the beaten semi-finalists is 3rd?
The highest placed side in the league? If so could that not be a side who finished 1st or 2nd?

the system mentioned used to be the format for the old premiership play offs after the league championship was won pre super league IIRC.Major T wrote:the system you describe was never used here but was used in the nrl. They complained about it constantly and it had some daft permutations so they adopted what we currently have. I don't agree with your premise anyway. If we win this week we'll be favourites next week. Should we win that we'll have a home game to reach old Trafford which we couldn't get if we finished fifth.curryman wrote:
I guess it just highlights once again what a rubbish system is being used for the play offs. You are better off 5th than 3rd.
The old system 1st v 8th, 2nd v 7th and so on was much better. It wasn't broken and did not need fixing.
I suppose we are reaching the point in the season where that idiotic club call none sense is back in our lives too. Is that being abolished with the new format next season? I really hope it is.

Club call is going though thank god

I agree. I am happy to say that both clubs were honourable enough to go for it and it made for a tremendous spectacle.josie andrews wrote:I understand what you are all saying re the bloody playoff system
Perhaps I'm naive enough to think that a club is honourable enough not to do something like that.
It was a daft question, though as someone else said, there was a scenario where it was in our interests to lose.
So glad I was wrong. It restored my faith in the great game we love. Shame about Mr Bentham, he tried his best to ruin it. Again. What gets me most about him is the smug grin he wears whilst making decisions which everyone else in the ground can see are wrong.

Throwing games as always gone on, back in the days at Central Park if the money wasn't on then we don't play. I have known pay negotiations to go on at half time and I remember Wigan giving St Helens a lesson in one game but after the break they decided they weren't playing and let the game go because there was a money issue at half time.

But players going on strike or giving a two fingered salute to management is totally different to coaches putting out weak teams/ throwing games because the end result is a team peaking for the playoffsWigan Watcher wrote:Throwing games as always gone on, back in the days at Central Park if the money wasn't on then we don't play. Its all about winning the title and lifting the trophy, I guess everyone saying differently on here would soon forget if we did throw a game if we won the last game of the season.southernpie wrote:But players going on strike or giving a two fingered salute to management is totally different to coaches putting out weak teams/ throwing games because the end result is a team peaking for the playoffsWigan Watcher wrote:Throwing games as always gone on, back in the days at Central Park if the money wasn't on then we don't play. So the original poster as a point.
Do people not think how did we ever win the thing last year after losing so many games near the end of last season... BUT OF COURSE THE PLAYERS WENT THROUGH THE MOTIONS LAST YEAR BEFORE REALLY TRYING...
Have they already done that again this year (Widnes, Bradford) ? Maybe!
