Wane bemused by Man of Steel shortlist

Post by josie andrews »

Wigan Warriors boss Shaun Wane has admitted he was surprised none of his stars made the shortlist for the Man of Steel award this term.

The Warriors are the favourites to go all the way and win the Super League Grand Final this season, with Warrington Wolves their next opponents in the play-off semi-finals on Friday. Matty Smith has been a standout performer for Wigan this term but failed to make the Man of Steel shortlist which consists of Daryl Clark (Castleford),

Chris Hill (Warrington), Jamie Peacock (Leeds) and James Roby (St Helens). Wane believes Smith should have made the cut following his achievements in the Super League this term.

He said: "I thought Matty would have had a chance with what he has done when (half-back partner) Blake Green has been out. "He's led the team really well. He was already high in my estimation and he's gone even higher this year. "I'm gutted for him.

The four who have been picked are quality players but to not have anybody from the Wigan team is pretty strange."

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

I'm not. It's a pretty good list. If one of our players was going to be on it I'd think it would be O'Loughlin but he's probably not been at his best consistently enough to make it this year. Smith's good but he's not Man of Steel quality at the moment.

Wane always sees everything through his cherry and white tinted lenses.

Peacock is well past it, no way should he be in the nominations, he must have been put in it by the Sky wallies.

IMO Peacock has been the best prop all season, i can't see many arguments if he won it

Perhaps, if other props had got the same amount of plugging by the rugby media and appearances on the Super League Show, they too would have had the same level of profile and chance.

Peacock has been good, but at the same time, no better than other props including a couple or so at Wigan.

Sentiment about his age has a lot to do with his nomination in my opinion.

Spot on WW have to agree been no better than many props this year. Sentiment rules in his inclusion.
