Why Are We In England

Post by josie andrews »

WAYNE Bennett says his team is ready for a ‘special’ experience when they take on the Wigan Warriors in the World Club Series in England on Sunday morning (Qld time).

Plenty have questioned the decision to go to the northern hemisphere for the World Club series that also includes a match between the Dragons and Warrington and the World Club Challenge between champions the Rabbitohs and St Helens.

But the Broncos have always viewed the opportunity as a way to expand the club’s international appeal and also the sport of rugby league in general.

While there is an element of getting ready for round one, Bennett sees the bigger picture and said it can’t always be just about winning NRL games.

"To do this sort of thing, it makes it pretty special," he said in Manchester this week.

"It's part of the experience of playing rugby league. To me it's not just about playing in the NRL.

"We're in bit of a transition at the moment. I'll be looking at some combinations and some match fitness.

"We start our season 10 days later against South Sydney. That's what I'm trying to achieve and play a good game of football.

"The result is not as important as the way that we play, the way we execute our plays and get some combinations working."

Bennett said the best team the Broncos could muster in England would run out at DW Stadium with Sam Thaiday’s calf problem improving.

"Sam had some problems with his calf muscle last year and he had some discomfort before the All Stars and didn't want to risk it and be out for six weeks like he was last year," he said.

"But he's good to go, as are Hodges and Parker who played in the All Stars."

The match will be televised on Channel Gem at 5.30am Queensland time (6.30am AEDT) on Sunday morning.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
