MATCH REPORT
Wigan Warriors Academy side ran in eight tries to rout the Castleford Tigers 44-14 at Orrell this afternoon. Matty Peet's side were dominant as Nick Gregson, Oliver Gildart and Josh Ganson all grabbed a brace, along with further scores from Kyle Shelford and Captain Jake Shorrocks, in what was a truly ruthless Warriors display.
Peet made numerous changes to his side from the win over Catalan Dragons last time out, with Oliver Gildart, Liam Forsyth, Tom Davies, Macauley Davis, and Kyle Shelford all coming into the starting line up.
The match started in brutal fashion with some huge hits going in from both sides but it was the Warriors who opened the scoring as a high bomb fell kindly for Nick Gregson to score just to the right of the posts, Captain Jake Shorrocks' converted and it was 6-0 to the hosts in the 5th minute.
Things got even better for the Cherry and Whites three minutes later as skipper Jake Shorrocks' dummied and went over under the posts to extend the Warriors lead, he also added the extras to make it 12-0. The hosts were in the groove now and a break by Tom Davies was finished off by Kyle Shelford who ran in under the sticks to make it 16-0, ever reliable Shorrocks' again kicked the additional two to make it a great start for Wigan with barely 12 minutes on the clock.
The Tigers did try and fightback, but it was great defence from the Warriors to keep them out close to their own try line on three consecutive sets, but the Yorkshiremen did post the next points in the 25th minute due to a score from Tom Holmes, as he dummied to break through the line and touch down, Ashley Robson converted to make it 18-6.
The Cherry and Whites hit back just before half time with Kyle Shelford's break and offload allowing Josh Ganson to dive in for the try, Shorrocks' once again kicked the two to make it an interval score of 24-6.
HALF TIME: Wigan Warriors U19's 24 Castleford Tigers U19's 6
Wigan burst out of the blocks just after the break with Josh Ganson getting his second score of the game by barging through the Tigers rear guard, Shorrocks' kept up his 100% record with another conversion, so it was now 30-6.
Castleford hit back next in the 51st minute, as Kieron Gill took a brilliant offload and raced away to touch down in the corner, the conversion was unsuccessful to leave the game at 30-10 to Wigan.
The Warriors then fought back themselves as Oliver Gildart powered his way through to grab Wigan's sixth try, Shorrocks' was unable to kick the difficult conversion from the touch line so it stayed at 34-10 with a quarter of the match left.
The visitors would not lie down however as Kieron Gill claimed his second try once again taking another offload to touch down in the corner, the score could not be converted so it remained 34-14 to Wigan. The home side once again replied as Nick Gregson pushed his way over to touch down for his second try, after earlier great work from Brad Lawrence. Shorrocks' could not convert as his kick unluckily rebounded off the posts, so the match stayed at 38-14 with ten minutes remaining.
The Cherry and Whites got their eighth and final try two minutes later as Oliver Gildart raced away down the left hand side and narrowed the angle for Shorrocks' successful conversion, the score was now a commanding 44-14 to the Warriors.
Wigan tried to put more gloss on the score line as captain Shorrocks' picked up a loose Tigers pass and offloaded to Oliver Gildart, but it was fantastic defence from the away side to force him into touch, so it stayed at 44-14 as the final result.
