Such sad, sad news, his mum had told me the other week that he still wasn't recovering from concussion issues, but I was always hoping he would recover.

Warriors Pay Tribute to Darrell Goulding

Wigan Warriors Rugby Director Kris Radlinski has paid tribute to former player Darrell Goulding following his retirement.

Goulding, a member of the 2013 double-winning team, made the decision to hang up his boots on medical advice after suffering a series of concussion injuries.

Goulding retires having made 150 Super League appearances at Wigan, on-loan at Salford and at current club Hull Kingston Rovers. He also represented England on two occasions.

The former Wigan St Patrick's amateur played 175 times for the Wigan Club scoring 72 tries. He appeared and scored in two Grand Final successes for the Warriors (2010 & 2013) and also played in the 2013 Challenge Cup Final win over Hull FC.

Speaking on the news, Rugby Director Kris Radlinski said: "Darrell is a very unassuming guy and the definition of a team player.

"A true centre with subtle skills, he could create opportunities out of nothing and Josh Charnley owes him so much for creating so many tries for him. He should be very proud at what he has achieved in his career.

"I met him last week and he told me all about his decision and asked about the transition. The retirement of a rugby player is inevitable, every player knows it is coming but nothing prepares you for knowing that you will never lace up the boots again.

"This is another reminder that the game we love is played by great athletes who put their careers and livelihood on the line every time they take the field."

Both I think.

I think whilst League was dirtier / dangerous to facial bones in the past now the collisions are mind blowing and routinely happening at or above ball height far more. Tackling around the ankles is very rare these days.

If you are implying the club let him leave or didn't go out of its way to entice him to stay (he was out of contract) because they knew he had a potentially life threatening concussion issue you must have very low opinions of the morals of those in charge at Wigan.

If the club knew he had an issue as serious as this it would have advised him to retire.

Do you really think they would be cynical enough to do otherwise?

Doesn't a player have to pass a medical when being signed by a club?
