May I point out that cycling was based in Manchester and got more gold medals at the London Olympics than was ever thought possible. Yes the games might have been in London but the sport wasn't based there. In fact most people don't understand why they built a new velodrome in London.
There is this unfortunate belief that everything has to be based in London. When you consider the transport problems and accommodation costs its amazing that this continues. Its not even in the centre of the country where it would be more accessible.
Sorry you did not read my post as it was intended. London is the largest city in Britain, the capital of England, the news centre of Britain (yes I know we have media city). Several years ago, IL stated that London was worth 10% to RL via SKY and I have no reason to believe otherwise.

Cycling is not a mass participation / attendance sport in this country. Yes, it is riding on the crest of a track with media profile and success but the Velodrome has not been responsible for seeing millions of people wanting to take up cycling, to what is already a nationwide / worldwide sport.

RL remains largely concentrated in the North and if it remains so it will receive the same level of funding / TV and the same media interest it always has. Take a look on Linkedin if you ever get the chance, vast swathes of school, particularly private have Rugby (Union) masters, often ex professionals and some of our best ex League greats now coach Union at an elite level. More importantly, I firmly believe that in any town there is a limited amount of potential professional sporting ability. In Wigan, we do fantastic but there is a limit.

We have London with just shy of 9 millions people. 9 million people with lots of youngsters who mat well have the potential to be the next Martin Offiah. 9 million people that have a huge say as customers / consumers in making SKY / BBC / ITV spend money on sport.

The bottom line is I want more young people playing RL to find more future RL greats (I do not care where they were born as long as it is in England albeit Home Nation rivalry would be great too and I want nearly 9 millions Londoners want to watch RL live or on TV because whether you like it or not London has the largest untapped playing potential in Britain and has the most influence upon TV / Media in Britain. Do not kid ourselves.

Better still if Great Britain start trouncing the Aussies at RL and 6, 7 whatever are from London then FANTASTIC.

Great post Bunny & welcome to the site.

Looking forward to the game ????????????
Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Spot on. I noticed this morning than Manly had moved their "home game" v Brisbane from Brookvale to Gosforth on the Central Coast some 50 miles away. Also Souths usually take one game per year to Perth 2,500 miles away and last week Melbourne played a "home game" v St George in Napier New Zealand.

Like CPW I'm sure there is another Offiah, Clubb, Sarginson down there somewhere and if this helps to bring then into the game then it's worth the effort and expense.

Re good ale pubs: The Royal Oak and Rake are both camra pubs & very good.

As for the amateur RL scene, sorry...I know very little about it. Nothing in fact. And when I was teaching PE London schools are big on football, rugby union, cricket and basketball. But we never touched upon league.

First time I've sat through a Rugby League game last night thought it was great, todays was even better.

I live in London and fancy gong to the game at The Den but checked the prices which are quite high.

Do you have to be a member to qualify for a discount or can anyone get these tickets at a discounted price when they go on sale on 10th August?

Thanks in advance..

i think the club have to be congratulated on trying something new. I don't think all the reasons stack up, but hey lets all stick with the M62 corridor and complain about lack of money, tv & media coverage, no star players, salary cap etc etc

at least IL & Wigan have the balls to try something. I don't see anyone else advertising on TV or taking a game to new areas for the club / sport to try and attract new sponsorship / fans. If the RFL had half the balls that Wigan do, or had tried things that Wigan had the game may be in a better place

at the end of the day RL is not the most popular sport in the UK by some way. We have to compete with Football, Union, Cricket and now with American sports to get coverage / space in sports shops to market merchandise, so any attempt to try and promote the club should be applauded,, or it we want the sport to go back to amateur / disappear into the oblivion, just do nothing, and then you will all really have something to complain about

it may not work, but I for 1 am not going to knock it without trying it

well done and good luck with this as I will be there to support the team

Prices, bar the Barry Kitchener stand, are similar to our home games (see link)

I personally think RL is best viewed from behind the goal so think of it as being the equivalent of watching Man Utd vs Everton for twenty quid.

Just saying and call me suspicious if you want..... Anyone who reads the Wigan Today website will be aware of the resident troll who creates multiple user names and too often pretends to be someone from somewhere else.

We get a new poster with 'local knowledge' who's never watched rugby league before. He replies to a post and 10 minutes later another new poster from London who's never seen a rugby league game. What are the chances?

I travel to London reasonably frequently staying over at the Union Jack Club near Waterloo station which is only a ten minute ride from Milwall, and I was stationed reasonably close by for a period albeit 36 years ago. I don't live there, but I do know that Madam Tussaud's is near Regents Park and a long long way north of the river. You can drive past it any day of the week, and from before it opens, there are literally hundreds of people on the street queuing to get in

So I ask myself why someone who has 'local knowledge' would claim that one of London's biggest attractions has its home in Southwark?

Also, Bermondsey tube is around a mile and a half away from the ground and would only be a 12 minute walk if you run.

I'm sorry but I think there is a bit more Springfield than Southwark about you Bunny
