Does this drop in support apply across SL, or is it just Wigan?.si_bax wrote:For all SL and Challenge Cup matches this year Wigan's average home attendance is down again. Any ideas why?

Excellent reference point. Perhaps it shows there is a limit to what attendances Wigan can attract from purely Wigan. No straw damn us wrote:Wigans attendances now are comparable and generally better than in the 1980's and 90's

Perception and reality are often quite away apart.
Bilko is a star, who IMO should be found employment somewhere inside Wigan RLFC.

More interesting when you see the biggest attendances in the 90s some as big as 29k .No straw damn us wrote:Wigans attendances now are comparable and generally better than in the 1980's and 90's

When we are limited to 24k now that extra 5k makes a difference but as we do not have any sell out games now makes our average now more remarkable.
Tie into that Thursday games and hardly any away support even more remarkable. Take these into consideration we are doing no worse now than then.
In the 90s we were winning trophies and had better players.

Attendances at most clubs go up or down depending on how the team is doing in the league and cup competitions and what success the team had in the previous season.
Will be interesting to see if the average attendance will continue to fall in view of losing a second Grand Final on the trot and lack of success in the Challenge Cup in the last couple of seasons or will it start to go up again as the season goes on and the team wins games more regular like it did in the first season under McGuire and we have a good run in the Challenge Cup Competition.
You only have to look at the attendances of the Latic's during their rise up the divisions, what they got in the Premiership and how they have fallen so much since they have gone downwards.
Many people today only want to watch a winning team, especially with trophy success and unlike other more dedicated supporters, not prepared to take the rough with the smooth.

I will throw a curve ball in WW, attendances went up when we were fighting off relegation, first season under Noble IIRC. I loved that survival era, the crowd was 'rocking' and every game did matter.Whelley Warrior wrote:Attendances at most clubs go up or down depending on how the team is doing in the league and cup competitions and what success the team had in the previous season.

I am not sure purely Wiganers attending games boost attendance. A previous poster made an excellent point about the DW restricting the biggest games attendances ad thus negatively the overall average.
I would love to see junior festivals at Central Park tied into home matches. For example; a Wigan Cumbrian Schools 9 Competition at CP. Coaches of each school following them down / supporting them at CP then afterwards attending a game at the DW! A South Lancashire (Preston, Leyland, Chorley) secondary schools competition; again at CP followed by a DW match. Even look at tying in the Ken Gee Cup to home games too.

We play Warrington at home on a Friday next year rather than Thursday last season.
A few seasons ago the crowd for a Friday game v Wire got over 20k. A similar increase over last year's 14k will help the average somewhat.
