Exactly, Lui is a Stand Off, unlike Williams who is a Scrum Half having to play at Stand Off because of Smith holding the Scrum Half position.

Even McNamara, selected Williams in his proper position for England.
You mention this a lot. Can you tell me what the fundamental difference between the positions is and why Williams would improve if he were a scrum half?

It would be interesting to square your description with the fact that we play split halves which I believe means there is almost no difference between the roles at Wigan.

It is very hard to differentiate these days in terms of role IMO but I do think one of the halves needs to be more of the old fashioned 6 in the sense of a running threat and support play. I think the way Wigan play means whomever is 6 or 7 they spend a large amount of time out wide trying to throw scoring passes to the centre/wings. Not sure Wigan's halves spend enough time in and around the POTB and working with the pack; particularly in our own half.

I do find Lui interesting in that his step is so exagerated but it still seems to work.

And he dropped him to replace him with Smith who put in a MOM performance.

Williams isn't at the races at the moment, there is no getting away from that.
And never will be as long as he is not playing in his correct position of Scrum Half along a top class experienced Stand Off like we had with Green and before him Finch and Barratt.

I don't see any discernable difference in the way Williams plays to the way Green and Finch played, in terms of role on the field and style - obviously, he's a bit less consistent, particularly in last tackles, but he's younger.

Isn't the 'traditional' stand off role note played by full backs joining in the passing line more? A team that do it a bit different are North Queensland, who quite often effectively play two FB/SO types in attack off one main pivot.

There is no difference in todays game between playing 6 or 7 so putting thr no7 shirt on Williams back will not improve his game.He has age on his side and may improve(and he needs to)whereas Smith is poor, always has been and needs replacing immediately.

Williams is a good young player but is not experinced enough at the moment to handle the vital position of main playmaker and as a result of his lack of experince is being exposed by the opposition and is one of the main reasons why he is doing nothing and the attack is not what it should be when we reach the 20 metre line.

As I have said before, he needs to be at his best position of Scrum Half with a top class expierinced Stand Off from down under to bring him on better.

He will not do so as long as he plays alongside Smith as they are playing like strangers to each other.

And I am not the only one saying it!

p.s We had the same problem when Green was out injured for a spell!
