Four potential destinations for Jack Reed

It appears there is a strong possibility that England international Jack Reed could be about to make the move to Super League.

Following Ian Watson’s revelation in League Express that he has an interest in signing the Brisbane Broncos centre for Salford next year, Red Devils supporters have been full of excitement about the potential signing.

No doubt, a player of Reed’s ability would be a fantastic coup for the club, but it is incredibly likely that Salford will face stern competition in the race to secure his services for 2017 and beyond.

Here are four clubs that are likely to be interested in the England star.

St Helens

Keiron Cunningham has tried several combinations out wide since becoming Saints chief, but so far he has struggled to find the answer he is looking for.

Mark Percival has been a standout star for Saints in the last 18 months and is one of the first names on the teamsheet at Langtree Park.

However, the other centre spot is up for grabs. Jordan Turner has spent a large amount of time playing in the halves when selected while Dominique Peyroux has played at second-row occasionally, which could be an indicator of Cunningham’s plans for the former New Zealand Warrior going forward. Matty Dawson has been a reliable performer when called upon, too.

However, one problem Cunningham has faced throughout his tenure at St Helens is the ability to pick a consistent backline, and with Reed’s history of shoulder problems, it might be a risk for Saints.

Huddersfield Giants

Reed is a West Yorkshire boy and a move back to one of his local clubs might be tempting.

The Giants already have Leroy Cudjoe and Joe Wardle, but the latter has been used as a second-row at times, with Jake Connor playing at centre.

However, Connor is out of contract at the end of the year and there have been suggestions of him moving elsewhere, which could open up a spot for Reed.

Besides, Huddersfield are understood to be significantly under the salary cap, so a move for Reed should be feasible.

Wigan Warriors

Perhaps the most obvious alternate to Salford is Shaun Wane’s Warriors.

With Josh Charnley and Dan Sarginson on the way out, the Warriors are currently tasked with finding replacements.

Although Sarginson has been utilised at full-back in the absence of Sam Tomkins, the NRL-bound star has often played at left centre, the same position as Reed.

Although they are very different in style, it’s also a straight replacement.

Salford Red Devils

Like Wigan, the Red Devils need a centre following Josh Griffin’s decision to move to Hull FC next year.

Reed fits the bill and also has the size and strength that Watson likes to have out on the fringes.

There is definite interest, but whether they can get him is another matter altogether.

I've only seen Salford linked in any rumours.

Has anyone started to notice the proliferation of speculation/opinion pieces from the 'journalists' that operate in Rugby League these days.

Instead of it being a one/two pager of 'gossip' each week it now seems to be that every other story they publish or post starts 'We understand that...' or 'A source has told us...', or just 'Here's what I think' pieces. At least Total RL usually headline them staring with 'OPINION:' - they should have done that with this piece too.

Speculation and opinion are fine, but 'news' outlets should make it totally clear when that's what they're putting up, so it doesn't actually get confused with News.

Last season Wally Lewis said on Premier Sports that Reed was considered by many in Oz as the best defensive centre in the NRL.Injuries have taken their toll since then though and imo is probably better left well alone.

Agreed. Especially at the kind of money he will undoubtedly be asking. Let him spend the next 3 years on Saints' treatment table!
