Wigan Warriors name 19-man squad for Super 8s opener

Josh Charnley and Frank-Paul Nuuausala return for Wigan

Wigan host Wakefield at the DW Stadium on Friday evening

Wigan Warriors have today named the 19-man squad for Friday’s Super 8s opener against Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

The Warriors host the Wildcats in Round One of the Super 8s as they turn to attention to the league, the Warriors currently sit in third position just two points off Hull FC in first place.

Josh Charnley and Frank-Paul Nuuausala return from suspension to boost the Warriors, the duo take the places of youngsters Joe Bretherton and Kyle Shelford in the squad.

Speaking on the returning duo, Warriors Head Coach, Shaun Wane, said: “Josh has been one of the best wingers in the competition this year. It’s his last year with us so he wants to come back and show what he can do, he wants to leave Wigan on a high.

“We got some good work into Frank last week with him not playing. We’re trying to get him up to speed and hopefully he can keep improving.”

Updating on the Warriors’ other injured players Wane added: “Liam Farrell (rib) and Anthony Gelling (pec) are very close – maybe next week. They’ll be two big boosts for us. If we get them back then we’ll have some competition in our outside backs and in the back-row.

“Tony Clubb (neck) is still a few weeks away, Joel Tomkins (knee) has gone for the season and we’ll just have to wait on Micky McIlorum (ankle).”

Wigan Warriors 19-man squad
John Bateman, Josh Charnley, Dom Crosby, Ben Flower, Oliver Gildart, Willie Isa, Dom Manfredi, Lee Mossop, Frank-Paul Nuuausala, Sean O’Loughlin, Sam Powell, Dan Sarginson, Jake Shorrocks, Matty Smith, Ryan Sutton, Taulima Tautai, Lewis Tierney, Sam Tomkins, George Williams.

Wigan Warriors host Wakefield Trinity Wildcats in Round One of the Super League Super 8s at the DW Stadium on Friday. The game kicks-off at 8:00pm and tickets start from just £22 for adults, £15 concessions and £15 for juniors and are available from the DW Stadium Ticket Office, the Ticket Hotline - 0871 6633 552 and online HERE.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

From that squad, I'd leave Tierney out and give Sutton a much-deserved rest for next couple of games. Team:

Sam
Manfredi, Sarge, Gildart, Charnley
Williams, Smith
Crosby, Powell, Flower
Bateman, Isa
Lockers

Mossop, Nuuausala, Shorrocks, Tautai

If we don't put a few points on a dispirited Trinity outfit then we are in trouble!

Wakey have their injury problems.

I think Sarge will be rested after his broken nose episode.

Perhaps Waney will go -

Sam
Manfredi, Gildart, Bateman, Charnley.
Williams, Smith,
Crosby, Powell, Flower,
Sutton, Isa,
O'Loughlin.

Nuuausala, Tautai, Mossop, Shorrocks.

Teirney
Manfredi, Gildart, Bateman, Charnley.
Williams, Smith,
Crosby, Powell, Flower,
Sutton, Isa,
O'Loughlin.

Nuuausala, Tautai, Mossop, Shorrocks.

id go this, on his preformence vs Saints and Hull Tomkins needs one of two things

1. rest to allow whatever knock he picked up at wakefield heal
2. dropping to show it doesnt matter if hes the marque if he doesn't play well hes not automatically in the squad next week.
These are two reasons not to trust people.
1. We don't know them.
2. We do know them.

It's best possible side out all the way for the next seven matches and see what comes out the other end.
I expect a Hull v Wire Grand Final with one of those two picking up the bin lid.
We aren't savvy enough and prone to egg laying which will result in a nowt again season.

Surely a repeat of the CC Final won't please Sky?

Maybe they could arrange to have the finalists changed to someone more suitable? :badg:

After watching Saints play like we do tonight, stifle Wire and eke out a win I think it's Hull's to lose.
