Match report as Wigan Warriors Under-19s beat Widnes Vikings 34-12 in opening game of the season

SUMMARY
It was a good start to the 2017 campaign for Wigan Warriors Under-19s as they eased past a determined Widnes Vikings Under-19s side 34-12 at the Fairhurst Accountants Community Stadium in Orrell on Sunday afternoon.

The game started slowly but Sammy Kibula put Wigan ahead in the 25th minute before Owen Buckley’s interception try pulled the visitors level 6-6 at the break.

Widnes went in front for the first time just minutes after the restart through Chris Wilson. The Warriors soon hit back though and were soon back in front after scoring three tries in 20 minutes through Liam Paisley and a double from Jack Wells.

Two Wigan tries in the last ten minutes of the game from Josh Ganson and Paisley sealed the two points for the Cherry and Whites.

TEAM NEWS
Warriors first-team squad members Caine Barnes, Josh Ganson, Callum Field and Jack Wells started for Darrell Goulding’s side while first-year Harry Smith was a used substitute.

Third-years Craig Mullen, Josh Woods and Liam Paisley also started for Wigan.

Vikings first-team forward Brad Walker played at loose forward after signing a full-time three-year deal with the club while Sam Freeman started at full-back.

FIRST HALF
Both sides had a number of chances to score early in the game but stern defences managed to deny them each time.

It took 25 minutes for the first try of the game to be scored and it was from Wigan’s Sammy Kibula who ran a superb line to bust his way over with no Widnes players being able to deal with the blockbusting forward. Josh Woods successfully converted to put his side 6-0 up.

Wigan’s experienced pack controlled the majority of the first-half with first-team players Caine Barnes, Josh Ganson, Callum Field and Jack Wells taking the game by the scruff of the neck and making good hard yards up the middle.

The visitors did manage to level the score with just three minutes of the first-40 remaining when winger Owen Buckley intercepted and raced 50-metres to score. Brad Walker added the conversion to tie the score at 6-6 going into the interval.

HALF TIME: Wigan Warriors U19s 6–6 Widnes Vikings U19s

SECOND HALF
Widnes came out all guns blazing in the second-half and scored in their first set when Walker got a nice offload away to the supporting Chris Wilson who dived over. Walker notched up the conversion to put his side 12-6 in front.

The Vikings try seemed to be a good omen for the Warriors though with the hosts clicking into gear and scoring five minutes later. Wells latched onto a lovely Josh Woods grubber-kick to score. Woods’ conversion attempt went just wide of the mark meaning Wigan trailed 10-12.

Wells grabbed his second in as many minutes when he broke the line and sailed over. Woods made no mistake with the conversion this time and Wigan were back in front.

Darrell Goulding’s outfit were in complete control following Widnes’ earlier try and extended their lead on the hour-mark as Liam Paisley showed good strength while running a nice line to barge over. Woods converted to put his side 22-12 to the good.

Two tries in the final moments of the game from Paisley and Ganson capped off a fine Warriors performance with Joe Brown converting both which saw Wigan run-out 34-12 winners in their opening game of the Under 19s season.

Coach happy with second-half showing

Warriors Under 19s Head Coach Darrell Goulding said he was happy with their start to the season following a 34-12 win over Widnes Vikings.

Sammy Kibula put Wigan in front midway through the first-half but Owen Buckley’s effort saw the game tied at 6-6 going into half-time.

The visitors went in front shortly after the restart through Chris Wilson but then doubles from Jack Wells and Liam Paisley along with a Josh Ganson try on the stroke of full-time saw Wigan secure a fine 34-12 victory in their opening game of the season.

“I was pleased with it overall,” Goulding said. “It was a little bit frustrating in the first-half because I think we went away from some of the things that we had practiced but I was really pleased with the second-half performance.

“We have got a lot of young lads in there and you forget sometimes that it is a big experience for them playing their first game but it is something that they will look forward to next time.

“They had a bit of a tough half-time talk though – they went away from some of the things that they promised for each other but I wasn’t too disheartened really from the defensive side of things.

“One of Widnes’ tries was an intercept and their second-half try we weren’t pleased with but for a first hit-out I thought we did really well.”

First-team squad members Caine Barnes, Callum Field, Ganson and Wells all started for the Cherry and Whites.

Former Warriors star Goulding was full of praise for the way they handled themselves on the field.

He added: “It is a massive lift for us to get that group of lads coming in.

“From a leadership point of view – a lot of the other lads look up to them and they take control and are like coaches out there for the younger players so they did a good job and they all played well.

“Harry Smith also did well coming off the bench. He added a bit of zip for us and a bit of direction with his play.”
