Dave, HS2 is timed London to Manchester in 1hr 8 mins rather than 2hr 8 mins by Pendelino.
London to Crewe 55 mins rather than 1hr 37 as now.
Wigan NW to London 1hr 10 mins rather than 2hrs 5 mins
The interesting bit will be not so much building London to Crewe which will cost less than Crossrail, but the 2b stage to Mcr, Sheffield and Leeds, That will be the really expensive bit.
Just my opinion, but with the Scottish Govt saying they will build HS2 from Glasgow/Edinburgh to Carlise will the Westminster Govt go for Crewe to Carlisle rather than the cross Pennine route.
HS2 is a 400kph train and will do London to Glasgow in under 3hrs.
Transport people pretty much agree a train service under 3 hrs will take 75% of the traffic on the London to Glasgow route.Planes now have 75%. That would take a lot of planes out of Heathrow.
I agree with DaveO for once, the HS2 is a complete waste of time just for the sake of 13 minutes, HS3 and the M62 smart motorway would better projects along with the construction of tidal barrages across the Duddon Estuary and Morecambe Bay creating 20,000 jobs, giving better access to the west and south Cumbria and could produce 6,510GWh of electricity a year - enough to power 1.52 million homes a year, a much better use of the money

HS3 is a waste of time and money.
The distance from Liverpool to Hull is under 120 miles. What's the point of having a 240 mph train on a route that isn't half that distance?
Far better upgrading the current route to 140 mph with conventional trains making the journey.
That would give Liverpool to Manchester under 20 mins.
Manchester to Leeds 30 mins and Leeds to Hull under 30 mins.
The 120 miles in 80 mins.
New tracks and signalling would be needed and the new trains if ordered can be built for 140mph as easily as for 125 mph.

I am not sure what post of mine you are replying to but just to correct any of your misconceptions, I am an ex-Hindley Greener whose Dad worked for Turners and who's Mum worked in Kays Confectioner's shop at the top of Swan Lane (and in the Swan Pub as a barmaid before that). I myself work in IT and have done so since 1981 in private industry for all that time (in London and up here). It just so happens I also spent 16 of those years working for the OU at the same time doing that on evenings and weekends. Passing on my experience to my students while actually doing the job for real.
