We now stand alone winning the trophy on 4 occasions more than any other club side with that win.

Serious question wf 1985 based on one of your earlier posts, would you rather Wigan finish top of the league each season playing a decent way for arguments sake the way castleford currently are but never win any of the major trophies. Or, play mediocre/poor every year but win one of the major trophies every year?
I'm main hope is that castleford can win this year in order to put this entertain or trophy argument to bed why can't we have both? St. Helens in 2006 were entertaining and won - Wigan in 2010 were both entertaining and won.

So to answer your question I would like both, my primary gripe is Wigan have been getting worst to watch since wane took over year on year imo. This year we have been abysmal

We are a chore to watch, and if you told me Wigan wee going to play like this again for the next 10 years and win a trophy every year to be honest I'd stop watching rugby I think.

Rugby used to be the highlight of my week but I literally dread watching Wigan at the moment, there's many better things I can do with my time I'm not just interested in trophies, I want Wigan to win trophies, but I also want them to play with passion, they aren't going to be brilliant every week but they haven't been good barely any week this season.

No doubt I'll get slated for saying this be calle not a true supporter or something, but at the end of the day I watch rugby because I like the sport or at least I used to the last few seasons haven't been that enjoyable to me, if I don't enjoy watching it anymore then my team winning it doesn't mean jack to me.

W-F 1985 you quote - "Let's get this right the wcc means jack squat".

Well I saw that match and saw and heard the reaction of the Sharks' players and management to their loss - just go back and re-watch.

For the record, the WCC has meant more than you may think, just look at their recent run of victories. And to the Aussie fans, it meant something when over 38,000 turned out to watch us against the Roosters over there.

Regarding this season, yes I agree performances have not been the best, or even the most entertaining, but I think any consistency was lost with the wholesale injury situation, with a number of key players and positions out for virtually the full season and for what it's worth I think the absencies of Sam, Bateman, Flower, Gildart, MM, Manfredi, and Escare have contributed to derailing the year, with loads of inexperienced players replacing those.

In fairness, given a fair run of injuries in 2018, I think then would be the time to GROW !

You can play best rugby all season like Castleford and end just end up with a wheeltrim (lls) like Huddersfield and wire and none won gf and i dont think cas will win gf. Doesnt matter how you play nowadays as long you finish in top 4 at end up super 8s and then anything can happen.
Your all deluded if you think waney will get sacked even if they dont win cc. I think he will get another 12 months.
I said in previous post he just needs a new coaching staff espa assistant

The sport has not been great to watch for past 5 years not just wigan. I blame the structure of the league.

When I say means jack squat I mean in terms of how it represents the teams level. The Aussies are all disadvantaged massively they don't have any competitive games they fly half way around the world and play in alien conditions. really we should win every year by we I mean uk teams

Wire showed how little a reflection it is on how good your team is they were white hot against a shell shocked Brisbane team and then have wound up in the middle 8's

If it was a mid season game then maybe it would be representative.

The seasons end, thats when it should be WCC time not a half arsed friendly in the middle of pre season, then we would see a match for all to crow about it,for me simply doesnt work where it is at the moment in the calander.

No way will Wane be removed this season, nor should he be at least before seasons end at least, this has been the most turgid season i can remember i'll agree with others the standards has gone down, but lets be clear if thats then case then so have Wigan's.

We can hide behind the injury excuse and it has merit, but these lads are so well drilled that the step up isnt as big as perhaps it is for other clubs, the lads know they could play and lets be fair most of the young lads did play at some point, its a different discussion if Wigan have a strong squad, but they certainly have a big one.

I looked at Wane at the end of the crunella game and wondered two things,

1,would he retire?

2 and if not had he the brass bangs to break up the side and start again as great coaches do when they feel that side has reached the point of nowhere else to go.

What has happened is the squad is stale, the insessant bringing back of players hasnt helped in that respect,a coach who seems to have only plan A it's a recipe for disaster really when you think about it,given the garbage Wigan have played this season is shows how poor the super league is that the side was even being mentioned about the top 4 at seasons end.

cherry.pie wrote:On the other hand our performances this year have been poor. No matter what excuse is put forward for this it isn't really good enough. We really did have a terrible time with injuries during the middle part of the season and, to some extent, it excuses the poor run of form we suffered during that time, but the promised return to form hasn't materialised. Sure, we're no longer on a losing run, but we also haven't found any sort of form, and some of the victories we picked up seemed to have an element of luck. Our home win against Leeds, for example, was against a very weak side.
The problem I have which you allude to above is the fact that regardless of who is on the pitch we have the same mistakes being made regardless. Lack of form isn't what I see. I see a team being consistently poor with a coach who reacts 99% of the time saying its not a Wigan like performance and we need to fix it, but then fails to fix it. Lack of form implies something has temporarily deserted the team. It looks worryingly permanent to me.

It's as if he is saying "Well I didn't tell 'em to play like that!" and yet we don't see any evidence of him having improved the side as the season has gone on and players have returned. The same mistakes are being made tactically by Wane and on the pitch by the players.

As I have said throughout the season even the injury list is a weak excuse. We have contrived to lose games we should have won.
Not that I think Lenagan should be sacking the coach. You have to consider the implications of sacking a coach when they've won the World Club Challenge and taken the club to the final of one of 2 major trophies available that year. If you're going to sack a head coach in that situation it's not going to present a positive image for a prospective new coach.
Do you think the new coach will care? I don't. The implications of not sacking Wane are potential lost season ticket sales and potential declining crowds and another season of dross on the pitch. He gets another off season to screw up as well.
Football teams may be able to get away with it where they pay millions to their managers in the top jobs and then sack them after 6 months (albeit with a large compensation payment) but rugby league isn't in the same boat. There aren't that many jobs available and a top coach will know that one impatient chairman could mean their opportunity at the big time is over and done with in less than a season.
RL is no different than any other pro sport. A coach's job is not a job for life and do you realise what you are saying here? Which is, a chairman won't sack a coach he has decided is no longer good enough so will keep him on despite the fact he sees it as detrimental to the club in case that puts other coaches off? Really???
There aren't many top jobs and there aren't many top coaches. Sacking a coach who has brought success is a risky game.
No it isn't. Every other coach can see through Wane and plenty would love the chance to work with the resources he has at his disposal. The idea they are going to be scared off because a coach clearly taking the team backwards is fired doesn't wash.
If we were to lose the cup final and finish the season in poor form then it becomes much easier for a chairman to justify pressure on a head coach and demand an immediate response at the beginning of the following season. If change doesn't happen then action can be taken. The format of Super League allows for a more patient approach, as proven by Saints. Cunningham was a disaster, he was given a short amount of time at the start of the year before being replaced and now Saints are in the top 4.
So what sort of response has IL been demanding this season? Has be been oblivious to all the faults that are not new in themselves but have just got worse this year? Is he the same as those fans who think everything is rosy because we won the WCC and got to a CC final?

What will IL do if we actually win the CC and carry on next season as we have this, continue to go backwards and don't even make the top 8? Give Wane yet another season because we are CC holders?

When does the past record cease to count in the face of present problems?

IL ought to know if Wane is running a happy ship and while it would be easy headlines "IL sacks CC winning coach" he has to do what is best for the club.
For those reasons I don't see why the club would be in any rush to sack a coach at this stage. As I said, losing the cup final and maintaining the poor run of form would change the outlook quite quickly.
I don't think IL will sack him but not for the reasons you state which I don't think stand up to scrutiny, particularly the notion you can't sack a coach with a record like Wane's because it will scare others off.

I do think IL has to be very careful in how he justifies keeping Wane on. Fan's can see through the injury crisis and know poor the form shown by the team is not a new thing. Plenty have also worked out the format of the two main competitions means you can win either despite pretty poor season if you can string a few wins together as opposed to being genuinely good.

Many fans are not optimistic of a CC win because of the team's poor form throughout the season. They know a CC victory won't have been part of a master plan or because we overcame an injury crisis. If the club comes out with that line, they will be treating the fans as mugs.

so what it seems like that if we win the wcc the aussies didnt care and only turn up every now and then. So if we loose they turned up if we win they didnt? Sounds like the sydney press.

None of the Aussie teams showed up this year in the WCC. They were all poor.

The WCC imo wasn't a show for any English team this year. The win for us, and for Warrington had diminished meaning for this reason. The WCC is simply misplaced in the calender and should be at the end of the season, not mid pre-season.

I will put money on the fact that if Wane is still in charge next year we will only go from bad to worse. Not looking to start a witch hunt.

Winning trophies is no excuse for the horrendous SL form. Its almost like saying Wigan couldn't care less about the SL trophy and weekly games (and the paying fans) and just want to win the CC.

I think more of this has lead to, and from, the sheer disappointment of the fans, and how they have been treated by the club on a week by week basis.

Take the coach argument away from the equation for a moment, we have won 10 lost 11 so far this season in the league, do people think that's good enough?
