My guess is that there's a possible common factor with our 2 most recent re-signings, Tommy and Sarge.

That is, lack of foresight and planning. Matty Smith's departure had been on the cards for months before it was confirmed. We needed a quality replacement, one with game management skills, preferably a long kicking game, possibly a goal kicker.

We came up with a former 7 who had lately played mostly at 9 and lacked the required skill-set. This suggests either no-one better was available, or we couldn't afford better, or we left it too late and settled for another old boy.

Fast forward a season and it's announced that Gells is going home (for how long?). At very least we need cover at centre. Now let me see, who's available? Anyone from PNG or islanders who shone in rlwc? Out-of-contract NRL players, maybe experienced players who would come on a 12 month contract?

No, we fall back on another former player with question marks over injuries.

As has been said earlier, I like Kris Radlinski, but is he perhaps too nice in favouring ex-Wigan players/mates? Or was the decision left until there was little choice?

Does anyone know how long a contract Sarge has got?

All this signing says to me is that Gelling is staying in New Zealand I hope not as I like the player and he's a much needed character for our diminishing game but like Sarginson he's very much a Marmite type player
catalans sign mead, wire sign roberts, hull sign Faraimo we sign.....sarge

Just a point of moderation, and no doubt debate, which of those teams has won a Grand Final, and to stoke the fire, if you recall Warrington have signed a million NRL stars in the last five years or so. And which player had a winning hand in it ?
which stars have they signed? they won the challenge cup twice hull did last year. So do we judge signings on winning trophies in the past? Bear in mind only 4 teams have ever won the grand final.

No the grass IS greener. Money and profile higher.

The reason they come back is quite simple.

THEY ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH.
We'll see next season whether they are good enough.

Think most people can see the flaws in Sarges game but given the parameters the club has to work within, he could be a good signing.

I wish him well and hope he proves his knockers on here wrong.
Spot on.
This lad is going to stick his head and his body where very few of his critics on here would venture.

The puzzle was his unwarranted selection for England. Don't expect it to occur again. He was IIRC replaced in the England set up by Percival.

If you want to rely on records and stats as opposed to your own eyes look at his stats in his last season for us. They were awful and back up the opinion of many that he is a poor player.

If all you ever go off is records you can find a long list of players who no one ever rated that ended up with medals and titles. Ricky Bibey being one, with his two CC medals. Sarge is just another in a long line of players who on paper have some impressive stats but in reality are very poor.

How many on here have played for their country at any sport? What sort of a daft question is that? About as many as have played for Wigan RL I'd imagine. None. So what is your point? Unless we have played the game at that level we can't express an opinion about players? Give over!

Why do you think those expressing a negative opinion of him are doing so? Some random reason? No, it's because they have watched the player make numerous mistakes themselves.

He is statistically even worse than Gelling. Most people know I am no fan of his and now he looks to have left we have, unbelievably, actually gone backwards with his replacement.

I seem to recall him sustaining a broken nose, going off to get it "fixed" and returning to the field of play. That takes plenty of guts. Or it did when it happened to Andy Farrell some seasons ago. You have to at least give him some credit for his bravery.
Shaun Edwards played a cup final v wire with half his face smashed up so what's your point?
The gulf between though between the two players is immense!

I’m kind of in agreeance with this. Could we have signed better probably but who knows?

I’m in firm belief that if a club would have taken FPN he’d be gone also from multiple people I’m hearing the club want rid of a player to strengthen in other areas so that tells me we are near spent up 1 out for 1 in type scenario for this season.

Forgive me if I am wrong but wernt there more optimism on here last year with as near as damn it the same squad?!

1 Escare
2 Davies 3 Sarge 4 Gildart 5 Burgess
6 Sam 7 Williams
8 FPN 9 TL 10 Flower
11 Farrell 12 Bateman
13 SoL

I’m ok with that 13 if I’m honest.

Would we be better with Cronk, Inglis and Cam Smith with the same coach same style? Probably not so I’m done shouting for superstar signings for the moment as I would much prefer a new coach with the cap space and room to make the team his own sooner rather than coach what’s been left to him all tied into deals and become a possible scapegoat.

I am by no means writing us off next season btw I really think that 13 is good enough to trouble the league.

Saints will be steaming next season and be well settled under Holbrook, Hull the same , Cas will dip IMO no Hardaker and Gale hasn’t a big game in him neither has Roberts. Wire will be interesting after some wholesale changes and Leeds I’m not sure, can Myler fit with Moon? How big a loss will McGuire and Burrows be?

We can’t be as bad with injuries surely??? If we aren’t we’ll be there or there abouts.

Two things. Can Sarge actually play right centre? He's always played left-centre or full-back and it's not straightforward to change sides . Also, if Davies & Sarge are there, expect more kicking like Marshall had to try and cope with last season. Davies is quite good defensively on the ground but those high balls could cause us problems.
