Sam Tomkins praises the Wigan fans for turning out against Widnes

Over 10,000 brave the cold as Warriors beat Vikings

Wigan run in 32 unanswered points to beat Widnes at the DW Stadium

Sam Tomkins has praised Wigan fans for their fine effort to come out and support their team to victory on a cold evening at the DW Stadium.

The Wigan team put in a big effort to score 32 unanswered points and come from 16 points down to beat Widnes. The fans also put in a great effort with over 10,000 braving the cold!

Tomkins said: “Overall, to get the win is good and in the second half we obviously improved a lot, as in the first half we weren’t at it.

“We were a little bit unorganised in our attack so we knew if we kept hold of the ball in the second half the tries would come and they did.”

A 70-metre try from Tomkins sealed the victory for Wigan late on, as he picked the ball up from a kick and ran through the Widnes team.

“I’ve not run that far in about 10 years,” Tomkins laughed.

“I was happy with that but it was just one of those, there was a bit of luck in it really. They were forcing me with chips over the top and the opportunity was there to run and I’m glad I took it.”

Tomkins gave a special mention to the Wigan faithful who braved the cold conditions in numbers for the first home game of 2018.

He said, “It was a fair effort from our fans. Not only getting to the ground but spending two hours at night sitting in the stands - it means a lot and the players really appreciate it because if they don’t turn up there’s no atmosphere and we wouldn’t have got that lift that we needed in the second half.”

Back to the performance, Tomkins added: “We felt like we really undersold ourselves against Warrington so to put things right this week is a good start and we’ve got a nice long turn around to get our bodies back into some good shape, as we play Wakefield next Sunday.

“Wakefield have improved on last year, significantly, and they were good then too so it’s going to be a tough task but we’ve got a long week ahead of us and we’ll do our homework on them and make sure we get that win!”

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Wane on Widnes

Reaction from Shaun Wane as Wigan beat Widnes 32-16 at the DW Stadium

Warriors fightback from 16-0 down to beat Vikings

Wane happy with how his side turned the game around

Shaun Wane declared himself happy with how side turned the game around as they fought back from 16-0 down to beat Widnes 32-16 on a cold night at the DW Stadium.

On the first half:

“Fair play to Widnes, they started off really well. Our first two sets were ok then we conceded a penalty on the last tackle, then we turned the ball over and couldn’t get out of our end and had to do some defending and next minute we’re 16-0 down. For the players to come out that hole was really impressive. The message at half-time seemed to sink in and they were able to turn it around.

On the second half:

“I was really pleased with how we responded in the second half. Being 16-0 down in this competition against a team that are flying like Widnes is tough, the fact we’ve come back from that and posted some points means I’m happy.

“We were more ruthless, we got to the end of our sets and were more composed in that final third and put them under pressure defensively too. I was happy with how we played in the second half.”

On the game:

“It was an awkward game, after the last few weeks and with the weather this week, we’ve not been out on the field but that’s the same for Widnes too so it’s been a difficult week.”

On standout players:

“Tommy Leuluai was ill this week and was touch and go about playing today but he toughed it out and I thought he was very good. Willie Isa was good off the bench. Sam Tomkins was competitive too. Ryan Sutton did well and was picked as man of the match by his mum (who was in hospitality)! Tony Clubb carried the ball strong and was banging holes into them in that second half. We’ll look at the reasons why we were 16-0 down but overall I’m happy.”

On Joe Burgess who started in place of Liam Marshall:

“Liam tweaked his ankle and didn’t train in the early part of the week and I’ve got Joe ready to go so I decided to make that change. I’m happy with Marshy but Budgie has done enough to stay in now and that’s great for me (to have that competition for places). I’ll take another look at the forwards this week and see if we bring anyone in there.”

On the staff getting the game to go ahead:

“All of the staff here did an incredible job in getting the game on so we’re really happy to get the win for them too.”

Wane said that Morgan Escaré rolled his ankle but seemed ok after the game.

First time I have missed a home game due to the M62 and the Woodhead/Snake passes were closed. Gutted, not only missed the game but also the wife's train money.
We live in Yorkshire so no choice and lost all that money! Not happy.
