At last another club who may have to shed top players because of the salary cap beside wigan.
I wonder how many good youngsters we will get rid of to fund gasnier coming.
He is a fantastic player but is'nt it time wgan rl started to keep the younsters they have invested money in.
Stop using the salary cap as an excuse wigan and start playing home grown talent, its like growing prize winning plants and then buying plants from another shop the way wigan do business.

The club can only do that if they are any good. Each year because the club produces so many young players it simply can't keep them all.spens dad posted:

It is not just a salary cap thing although no doubt the 20/20 has an impact but it is simply impractical to keep all the graduates from the U21 team on, each tear, when they turn 22!
In any case, have you seen the make up of the 28 players in the 2006 squad? Wigan probably have more home grown talent in that 28 than any other club does in theirs.
I am not defending the fact we have eight overseas players next year as I think ideally we should have three but at the same time if each year, one or two young players are offered full time contracts then that is good going.
What I mean by that is I only expect one or two players to be really good and while there may be half a dozen decent players it is just impractical to keep them all on despite the salary cap.
From now on you will see Wigan release a lot of young players each year. It is now the nature of the game with contracts and salary caps. Have a look at Australis and you will see clubs can change their entire team year on year it seems as they comply with the cap and players contracts expire.
It is now no different here and hard decisions have to be taken about who stays and who goes at the end of each season and that inlcudes young players as well as experienced ones.

People moan because we released a good few young players, guess what it happens every year at every club. They arent all good enough and they wont all make it, you cant blame the clubs for letting young players go. Last year we had Hansen, Hargreaves, Prescott, Gleeson, Ashton, Melling, Goulding and Joel Tomkins who have all been retained from last season and who all came through the academy. Then we have players like Jewitt and Michael McIlorum, Coyle and Walker who we did not see much or even nothing of who have been given first team squad numbers.
Add to them Lockers and Hock who have also come through the junior ranks and thats 14 home grown players in our squad for next year.
So tell me Spens Dad, what you are basing your oppinion on, the players we released are not good enough, its simple and its the truth. Allen, Beswick, Coyle etc did not show enough to me that they were going to be great players, obviously the coach felt the same way.

Re: gasnier
Look at it this way should we:
1. Lower the standards of our team to include players from our academy
2. Increase the standard of the game so youth player have to play better and work hard and become better players.
It will take a while to get to the point were there are enough good British players in British squads that they don't need Australian. You can already see that some player are developing to be better then players brought in form Aus.

Being from Wigan doesn't make you good. Being good makes you good. I wouldn't play anyone who's mediocre just because they come from Wigan.
Some of the lads they have let go simply aren't good enough to hold down a regular first team place next year and are getting too old to stay in the Academy much longer. If they want a career they have to go elsewhere, and on the other hand the club has to accept that once in a while one of them will be a late bloomer and come back to haunt us.
You make your best guess at the time if you're the Head Coach.Looking at the ones they let go the year before (and before that) you have the likes of Luke Robinson, Andy Grundy, assorted Rodens and the odd Farrell (not Andy). The ones we've hung on to include O'Loughlin, Hock, Brown, Hargreaves and Prescott. Some people would argue about the decisions on Robinson and Brown (though not me), but apart from that would you swap them?
Let's not forget that Wigan has always had a sprinkling of foreign stars as well as locally produced players - going right back to the days of Lance Todd. I'll admit eight for next year is a bit more than a sprinkling, but I think you have to look at the issue of a very talented but still young batch of local stars who need some quality senior support for a year or two.

Squad number 18!
Re: gasnier
We have to be realistic regarding youngsters. During the past two seasons we have brought them in out of necessity not outstanding talent. Yes they may develop but look at Maguire,Walker,Bailey,Mathers Burrows and Calderwood at Leeds. Even with the rosiests of Wigan specs do we really think Coyle,Beswick,Allen and co are as good considering similar ages. The really good ones will get their reward like Hock,Hansen and O'Loughlin. The key players in the squad need to have quality and experiance to support a smaller number of home grown players whilst they learn.

Re: gasnier
wigan need a feeder team where we can send players who may become special. instead of just letting them go to other teams who are laughing at us for getting rid of good players. batley or whitehaven would love the chance to give some of our 23 year olds a game.
dont let your victories go to your head or your failures go to your heart

Yeah, send them to Haven and I'll keep an eye on them for us!the grinch posted:

Re: gasnier
There's a couple of years difference between many of those you mention, the (ex) Wigan lads being barely 20 whereas the Leeds players you mention are 22 and 23. Maguire, Bailey, Mathers, Burrows and Calderwood have all been playing first team for quite some time, whereas Coyle in particular only had about half a dozen games. You're right that Allen and Beswick weren't good enough, but again they didn't play first team as much as the others listed. Not really a totally fair comparison, although I couldn't really see any of the Wigan players mentioned developing as well as their Leeds counterpart.IJS posted:

But remember that the youth structures at both clubs owe a lot to Dean Bell, and he was setting things in motion at Leeds a couple of years before he came back to Wigan so we'll be a couple of years behind in seeing the benefits of his work.

True. To get him we would have to make him the highest paid player in the world. How much is he worth to us?
