Good luck to him.

He has no doubt put a lot of effort into the job, and clearly has a passion for Wigan.

However, he has taken us as far as he can and the time is right for change.

Best of luck Shaun and thanks for the last few years.

Might be reading into things here but in the wigantoday interview i noticed wane said "a year ago i never thought id go to union"

does this suggest something has dramatically changed in the last year to either force him or force his hand to move out of Wigan?

First of all, I don't see how they "signed" him off us because he resigned but whatever.

This bit of the article made me laugh:

"Scotland Head Coach, Gregor Townsend said: “There is a lot we can learn from Shaun in both the technical side of the game as well as wider aspects of coaching. The range of skills now needed across the pitch in rugby union, aligned with the style of play we are developing means that all our players have to be able to pass accurately and deploy effective lines of running that will either hold defenders or find space. What Shaun brings from rugby league is immediately transferrable and will add real value.”

Lack of most of that is why we need a new coach.

Smart move for Wane though. I don't think how he has had Wigan playing these last few years would have any top flight clubs after his services so a life of driving taxis beckoned.
harsh but true dave .
good luck to him chasing the pennies but it's a very strange appointment from their point of view.
He'll need more than luck. Can't understand the rationale of the Scottish Union. Hope. He's not on a success or return basis

It's no worse than has been said with reference to many an ex player or ex coach who people have been glad to see the back of. No one gave a monkey's toss what these players or coaches did when they left. Many are still ridiculed today (like Moran who was mentioned in another thread). Half the time it's even worse than that in that when a decent player or coach decides to leave they suddenly become rubbish aspersions are cast on their character and they get all sorts of stick (Charnley being a recent example). Forums reek of such hypocrisy and Why Wane is so precious I have no idea.

You also know what I meant by it which is the likely future of Wane was unemployment because IMO no other RL club would take him on, just like West. Too much associated with Wigan and in Wane's case none of the current top flight clubs would swap their coach for him. He's done well to get out before he got the boot and has gone to a different sport which I feel was the only option open to him.
Really? If you can find me a single instance of somebody using someone else's choice of job after leaving the game as a means to demean both a current coach and a past coach, I would be astonished. Both the men you are insulting have nobly served our club for decades. If you can't see that your sneering dismissal was at worst snobbish and at worse classlessly vindictive, then there is no hope for you.

Good luck to Wane, he has never given less than his best for the club.

I have criticised SW for his coaching methods and lack of ideas when we have been struggling but he has always been honest and full of passion for this club. There will always be people willing to make distasteful remarks and they are usually those that have hardly played the game or never been in a position of responsibility for other peoples actions.Good luck to SW and I hope is a success.

Davo's taxi comment made me chuckle. To describe it has absolutly in bad taste or appalling is hysterical nonsense and an insult to taxi drivers to boot. It was merely Dave at his sarcastic best

Demean a past coach? What are you on about? The way West was treated was a disgrace and it's news to me he chose to be a taxi driver rather than be a coach.

West was very badly treated by the club IMO but was so much associated with Wigan there was no job for him at another top RL club. As a result he ended up out of the sport and driving taxis.

West did things running things like the Knights of Central Park etc before he got the top job and was a true gent. My late Dad dealt with him personally over lost tickets once and he could not do enough to help. I said at the time he took the job I wish he hadn't because ultimately he'd be sacked and would be lost to the club (remember patience with coaches back then was minimal) and my fears were realised.

I believe Wane is also too associated with Wigan to be of interest to another top club but also no one will be interested because he's basically crap. He's had more resources than any other coach and has returned 3 out of 15 possible trophies while conjuring up some of the most boring RL on the planet and a decline in win/loss ratio in the league.

I have no such regrets about Wane leaving as I did West and I am glad he's going. God knows what the SRFU see in him and I don't get the outpouring of goodwill to a coach whose record is so poor. Back when West was coaching Wane would have been sacked after we lost to HKR ar Leigh in the cup and no one would have batted an eye.

Just because you hate Wane Dave is no need to go on about it all the time!

It’s getting rather tiresome.
Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
