Warriors Women’s Head Coach previews Sunday’s Women’s Super League fixture vs St Helens Women

Wilkinson admits pre-season has had its limitations but says the signs have been positive

“We will very much be focused on the game and not the occasion.”

Wigan Women’s Head Coach, Amanda Wilkinson, believes her side is more than ready for the 2019 season as they gear up to play their first game of the year (K.O 1pm).

The Warriors Women host local rivals St Helens Women at the Robin Park Arena on Sunday afternoon as they head out on their second year in the competition. Although the Head Coach admits that pre-season hasn’t gone as smoothly as planned since the Christmas Break.

“Things haven’t gone quite as planned in the off-season. We had a few pre-season games scheduled which got cancelled due to bad weather in the early stages of the year and a few sessions that have had to be changed for one reason or another.”

“This has thrown us a bit, as it is essential to get everyone back into the routine of playing prior to the Season, but we’ve done some extra sessions over weekends to fill the gaps and we’ve made some really good gains through doing work in the gym. Bodies have changed in such a short time, so it’s still been really positive.”

A few weeks ago, the Women confirmed their squad numbers for the upcoming season, with 27 names available for selection and a number of new additions this year. On the new faces, Wilkinson said: “Any new face is a positive. As a coach I think it’s exciting for the game of Women’s Rugby League that we have a range of players joining us this year who are different ages, from different backgrounds and are all here for different reasons.

“For Example, Molly (Vicky Molyneux) comes to us as one of the more mature players, has a great background in the sport having played for England too, she comes back playing after some time out. Then at the opposite end of the scale we have a young girl in Megan Grace-Holding, a 16-year old who is new to the game having only played at school, never played for a club before but is definitely fighting her hardest for a place in the starting line-up on Sunday.”

She added: “It’s just a great feeling to give these players, particularly the younger ones, the opportunity to develop and learn in a first team environment.”

Wigan Women v St Helens Women will be show live on the OurLeague app as part of an initiative to produce more coverage of the Women’s game in 2019.

“Even last year, the competition grew massively from start to finish. This year there’s the extra team in Wakefield, which means we get some extra time on the field with less weeks off. Last year the bye was a bit of a disadvantage in our eyes, it seemed to be a hinderance rather than help as we would find ourselves hitting some good form and then we had two weeks off without a game.”

“Although the competition is growing, it is important that the standard grows and develops with it too. There are so many opportunities now for Women in Rugby League, and sport in general - but we are lucky to have a bigger initiative for coverage this year, along with the backing of Coral for the Challenge Cup. The competition will 100% be better than ever this time around.”

The Warriors won all three encounters against their rivals last season, so it is gearing up to be a fantastic opening fixture for both sides, though the Warriors Coach is keen to focus on the game.

“With it being the first game of the season, it won’t need anyone to get a buzz building around the game, and being a derby too, everyone will be up for it. Our Captain and Vice-Captain, as well as many others are Wigan through and through, so they’ll instil that pride into the rest of the team too.”

“It is a huge game to start the season with, which is great but we’ll want to go in thinking which way tactically and technically we can beat them. We will very much be focused on the game and not the occasion.”

Amanda Wilkinson does face her first challenge of the Season though, with a selection headache ahead of the first tie. On the team, she said:

“The good thing this year is there is lots of competition for places. It’s a headache for me, as I have a lot of decisions to make, but it’s not a bad headache to have. Some people have turned up to training and really impressed over the last few weeks so they’re definitely up there as pushing for a spot this week, but I’m excited about all the prospects we have this year.”

Tickets will be available on the day for the opening clash between Wigan Women and St Helens Women at Robin Park Arena on Sunday 7th April, 1pm Kick-off. Tickets will be free for Season Ticket Holders, with non-Season Ticket holders priced at £5 per Adult and £3 per Child.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
