Rugby League set for independent review into the state of the game?

Got something to discuss about RL in general? Then this is the place to post it.

Salary cap should be only calculated on players wages from the respected clubs not what they earn away from the game if Sam Tomkins wants to model for Matalan this should not be taken in to account. Funny no player has taken the RFL to court about this before.
Agree with you 100% until the wider world can see our sport then all other things such as reviews are utterly meaningless.

Of course what they earn from rugby should count on the cap anything else is up to them, the game does have stars but we mean to hide them away almost ashamed of what they are and maybe what they can earn from publicity.

Madness no other word for it

I have said the same thing for a long time.

The RFL and the salary cap zealots were so frightened that this would give an advantage to big clubs who had star players they have deliberately put a barrier in the way of players enhancing their earnings.

They don’t worry about this in football. Only last week Christian Ronaldo went to the top of the pile for earnings for product endorsement on Instagram earning up to $1.6m per endorsement! He displaced Dwayne Johnson who’s on $1.5m.

In fact he earns more from endorsements than he does playing football to the tune of $14m ($41m v $27m). Obscene amount of money I know and I am not saying RL players would ever command that but in the world of “influencers”surely RL players could earn a decent amount doing this?

When we see players like Manfredi forced to retire we see what a short career it can be. He’d likely be much better off financially if he’d been allowed to earn outside the sport.

It would also probably help stem the flow of players to the NRL. I don’t go for this “I want the challenge” notion. It’s the money for many in my opinion and I think quite a few wouldn’t even entertain going down under if they could earn from endorsements.

It could also even attract top NRL talent here boosting the quality of the competition. If NRL players could earn more doing product endorsements and what not in the much larger markets of the U.K. and France than in Oz they may want to play here.

The RFL are so far behind the times with stuff like this it’s criminal.
