Re: Pace
rather have Gareth Gale, more prolific and is at least a right winger

I didn’t say he was shit. I just don’t think there is anything to suggest he’s a top player or that he’s SL standard.Mike wrote:Yeah, but by Dave's thinking he's shit because he was dropped by the NRL.
Do you have any faith in our scouting that they have found a gem of a player no NRL club signed after he left Manly and no other SL club was interested in?
French was clearly up to playing in the NRL and I have seen videos of him scoring tries in the NRL as opposed to Miski scoring in the U.K. championship.
The bottom line is how does he compare to wingers we have had in the recent past like Burgess, Davis and Charnley? Anyone think he’s going to be as good as any of them?

Re: Pace
Our scouts are pathetic once every blue moon they may find a special player!
Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Ten academy championships in twelve years!!!josie andrews wrote: ↑Sun Sep 26, 2021 7:15 am Our scouts are pathetic once every blue moon they may find a special player!
Once the players are "scouted" and signed it's up to the coaching team to develop them.
Who do you think we've missed out on?
Re: Pace
Well it was John Monie who said you would do well if you got two first team standard players from your academy or equivalent. No straw damn us wrote:Ten academy championships in twelve years!!!josie andrews wrote: ↑Sun Sep 26, 2021 7:15 am Our scouts are pathetic once every blue moon they may find a special player!

The fact Wigan have won those ten championships yet have
produced just two decent centres in all of that time (Goulding and Gildart) suggests he wasn’t wrong.

So we're only to be judged on producing centres?DaveO wrote: ↑Sun Sep 26, 2021 11:47 amWell it was John Monie who said you would do well if you got two first team standard players from your academy or equivalent. No straw damn us wrote:Ten academy championships in twelve years!!!josie andrews wrote: ↑Sun Sep 26, 2021 7:15 am Our scouts are pathetic once every blue moon they may find a special player!

Or from another viewpoint - we have only payed particular concern to signing back rows with a particular skill-setNo straw damn us wrote: ↑Sun Sep 26, 2021 12:02 pmSo we're only to be judged on producing centres?DaveO wrote: ↑Sun Sep 26, 2021 11:47 amWell it was John Monie who said you would do well if you got two first team standard players from your academy or equivalent. No straw damn us wrote:

Halsall has plenty of promise, as does Hanley (after being asked to play out of position for most of his first grade games). Tanks a little empty after that
Back by demand.

I’m not talking about academy players I’m talking about experienced players! Other clubs seem to find these type of players why don’t we?No straw damn us wrote: ↑Sun Sep 26, 2021 11:40 amTen academy championships in twelve years!!!josie andrews wrote: ↑Sun Sep 26, 2021 7:15 am Our scouts are pathetic once every blue moon they may find a special player!

Re: Pace
Our academy scouting seems fine, although there are definitely positions where we don't produce top players with the same regularity as other positions. Those problem positions being centre, hooker and fullback. We may have converted academy players from other positions into those roles but rarely in recent years have we developed players in those positions from academy to first team standard. Not sure how that compares to other clubs though but most clubs don't seem to produce as many first team standard players as us full stop.
When it comes to experienced players mainly we just suck at recruiting props. In all other positions we've seemed to be okay and on balance no better or worse than other clubs.
