Wigan Athletic: HMRC lodges winding-up petition against League One club

His Majesty's Revenue & Customs has lodged a winding-up petition against Wigan Athletic over unpaid tax bills, with a hearing date of 26 July.
It follows the English Football League placing the Latics under a transfer embargo last week for breaching league rules on tax payment.
Wigan will begin the League One season after relegation with an eight-point deduction for late payment of salaries.
It also understood money is outstanding from last month's salary payments.
The club has said it is in the process of being sold but one of the interested parties, 21-year-old businessman Sarbjot Johal, failed to gain EFL approval for his proposed purchase of Morecambe earlier this year.
Winding-up petitions can be resolved by payment of debt or by arrangement of a payment plan with the creditor, in this case HMRC itself.

It looks like the Danson rumour came from a comment by Paul Kendrick that has been requoted in an article on a site called theathletic that sits behind a paywall, but can be read on latics speyk
But the winding up order does raise a question, If Danson is looking to buy it, why do it now? He can get it much cheaper on the 26th July, they don't seem to be awash with bidders.

Maybe they could melt it down and make something more important like a bin or something

Re: DW
given he's a vested interest in Wigan RL, it would make sense if he's as rich as we are led to believe, that he splashes a few million and keeps the Latics afloat, without them being relegated way back down the league ladder. It may cost him a bit more now, but in the long run, would that be worth it over getting them cheap, but only having 1500 fans on each weekLazy J wrote: ↑Mon Jun 12, 2023 4:41 pm It looks like the Danson rumour came from a comment by Paul Kendrick that has been requoted in an article on a site called theathletic that sits behind a paywall, but can be read on latics speyk

from a rugby perspective, if the Latics are wound up in the courts, where would that leave us? I know they would be looking to get as much as they could to pay for the debts and football debts usually come first and then other creditors, but if the HRMC are involved does that take precedent? Could we not have a home ground to play games on if there is some sort of embargo placed on the latics?
