Mike Gregory drops case

Post by cpwigan »

Former Wigan coach Mike Gregory on Monda withdrew his claim for compensation against the Super League club.

The 42-year-old former Great Britain international was given an ex-gratia payment of £17,500 by the Warriors after dropping his case at an employment tribunal in Manchester.

Gregory has been battling a debilitating illness for almost two years and was officially on sick leave at Wigan until his contract ran out at the end of last season.

In a statement, Wigan chairman Maurice Lindsay said: "We arrived at the tribunal hearing intending to resist any further claim as we had already paid Mike every penny he was due under his coaching contract, even though he had not worked for the club for a period of 18 months.

"Having seen Mike at the hearing we realised that his health had deteriorated further and we instructed our barrister that under no circumstances was he to cross-examine Mike Gregory in the witness box.

"We would not have been comfortable putting Mike through that stress. We made a payment of £17,500, although it was officially confirmed that Mike was making no claim for the loss of earnings.

"We had honoured every penny of our contractual obligation.

"The matter is now officially ended and we wish Mike all the luck in dealing with his sad illness. He and his family have our utmost sympathy and it is clearly a sad time for everyone."

Gregory, who won 20 caps for Great Britain and captained them to a series win over New Zealand in 1989, was promoted to head coach at Wigan following the departure of Stuart Raper in 2003 but was forced to step down after the 2004 Challenge Cup final because of illness.

He played for Warrington for 12 years, captaining them at Wembley in 1990, and the club raised around £50,000 for him from a pre-season benefit match.
