Cade Cust set for Wigan Warriors exit as two clubs aiming to lure Super League playmaker
CADE CUST is set for an exit from Wigan Warriors as two clubs hold talks with the Super League playmaker.
Cust, who played a key role in Wigan’s 2022 Challenge Cup success, has been used more sporadically by head coach Matt Peet in 2023 with the Warriors boss favouring Harry Smith and Bevan French in the halves and Brad O’Neill and Sam Powell at hooker.
The playmaker does have an option in the club’s favour to extend his deal with the Warriors, but the Lancashire club will not be taking Cust up on that, League Express understands.
Cust’s manager, Chris Orr, has revealed that two clubs are in talks with the 24-year-old to bring him back to Australia.
“I don’t think he will be there (at Wigan in 2024) so we are working on him coming back to the NRL,” Orr told League Express.
“He has a couple of leads back here. We are talking to Wests Tigers and talking to the St George Illawarra Dragons.”
It still remains to be seen where Cust’s future lies beyond 2023.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

It’s a shame he’s been blighted by injuries there is a very good player in there but when he can barely string together a run of games to find his form I really hope he gets himself sorted both with a club and his injury issues.

its a pity as he's been blighted with injuries and i think most fans have warmed to him, and his performances generally last year were pretty good
however, the upturn in form of Miski when he was given his chance earlier this year and Cust's persistent injuries have prevented any real chance of him gaining that extension
what does surprise me a little is the interest from Oz, as surely the game is harder down under (or more consistently played at high intensity) that here, so you'd have thought he'd be looking for a contract here 1st. Or, if you look at Tom Johnstone, plagued with injuries at Wakey, but dont think he's missed a game with the sun on his back in France

So if we can keep him, which we wont then surely we have an overseas spot still available?

I think option was in the clubs favour pal. I think keighran will replace him on the quota as all our other spots are taken.Firestarter wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 1:13 pmIt says he has an option to extend his deal.Thats why i put thisnathan_rugby wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 1:12 pmWe cannot keep him, we do not have an overseas spot available.Firestarter wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 1:08 pm So if we can keep him, which we wont then surely we have an overseas spot still available?

He doesnt have the option of an extra year, as Wigan have told him they arent exercising that option, so he is effectively out of contract and available
