No one underestimates how valuable he is to the squad's success.

on form well deserved contract extension, but equally its the stability for a period of time in a key position
if we can keep Smith for the 4 years, and have French / Field alongside him at 1 & 6, for all or most of that time, we have a spine that will be frightening with the speed and ability to control the game from Smith too

Fantastic bit of business. A few Saints fans thought & hoped that we'd dropped a clanger with our recruitment this year & wouldn't be able to afford to offer Smith a new deal worth accepting, especially with talk of an offer from the NRL.
