Luke Keary set for shock Super League move after retirement backflip

Post by josie andrews »

The three-time NRL champion is on the verge of completing a move to Super League.

NRL superstar Luke Keary is on the verge of completing a move to Super League with Catalans Dragons. Rugby League Live can exclusively reveal the Sydney Roosters halfback has held extensive discussions with the French club and is set to make a retirement U-turn by joining the Dragons in 2025.

Keary shocked the NRL by announcing he would retire at the end of the season in April, despite having just signed a contract extension with the Roosters. But he is now set for a shock backflip on that decision, after holding talks with Catalans about a move to France next year. An agreement is thought to have been agreed and Catalans are expected to finalise a deal shortly.

His arrival will be seen as a huge coup for both the Dragons and Super League, with Keary one of the game's great halfbacks. An outstanding career has seen him win three NRL Grand Finals, firstly with South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2014 then the Roosters in 2018 and 2019. He was the recipient of the Clive Churchill Medal for his performance in the first of his two titles with the Roosters.

An Australia and New South Wales representative, Keary has made 218 NRL appearances in his career and remains among the competition's best halfbacks now. This season, he has played 13 times for the Roosters and currently has 10 assists and two tries to his name.

Catalans are on the lookout for a new halfback, with Jordan Abdull set to leave the club at the end of the season to join Hull FC. That has seen them turn to the 32-year-old, with Siosiua Taukeiaho set to depart which will open up a quota spot in their squad. The Dragons, Grand Finalists last year, are currently sixth in Super League.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Following in Mitchell Pearce's footsteps, then. Abdull has been a flop signing for Cats.

Catalans spine, apart from Mac, is very poor. Morgue, Fages and any of the No. 6’s are not up to it. They need someone like Keary to get them out of a hole.

I think Keary will do really well at les cats. They do seem to be in the middle of a re-build and I hope they can bring in a few more French players in the process.
