Ian Watson: Huddersfield Giants coach steps down with immediate effect ahead of Super League match with Leigh Leopards

Post by josie andrews »

Huddersfield Giants and Ian Watson have parted ways; Huddersfield sit eighth in Super League after 16 matches and face Leigh Leopards this weekend; watch Leigh Leopards vs Huddersfield Giants live on Sky Sports Mix on Saturday at 3pm

Ian Watson has stepped down as Huddersfield Giants head coach with immediate effect ahead of their match against Leigh Leopards on Saturday.

Watson joined Huddersfield ahead of the 2021 season and had signed a new four-year deal in 2022 but will not manage the club when they take on Leigh - live on Sky Sports Mix at 3pm on Saturday.

Huddersfield were thrashed 48-0 last Friday by Warrington Wolves with a performance that Watson labelled as "embarrassing."

Following today's scheduled monthly board meeting the club has stood down Head Coach Ian Watson with immediate effect," read a Huddersfield Giants statement.

"Luke Robinson will take charge of the team ahead of the upcoming Bet Fred Super League game at Leigh at the weekend.

"Neither the club nor Ian will make any further comments."

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

More surprised that he's lasted this long. Massively underachieved with the players he's had at his disposal.

Perhaps they've waited this long to make sure a replacement is lined up.
That squad should be doing better than they are.

And the financial backing he's had.

I never had the feeling that he carried the dressing room with him, even when Salford went on their once in a decade jolly.
