Super League Disciplinary: 10 sin binned and 1 sent off as sides sweat verdict
The Super League disciplinary process undertaken by the Match Review Panel will be an incredibly lengthy one after a whopping 11 cards were handed out during Round 17 of the competition, ten of those being sin bins whilst one was red.
Earlier in the season the Super League disciplinary fallout was a huge topic of discussion as players were forced to adjust to new tackling laws but in recent weeks it had settled down. Round 17 has seen a huge spike in the number of players sent from the field and it makes sense that five of the ten to be sin-binned were playing in derbies.
The first derby of the round came on Friday night as Wigan Warriors hosted St Helens and the drama started almost immediately with Saints forward Matty Lees sent to the sin bin after just 58 seconds for his high shot on Kaide Ellis in a game that Wigan would go on to win 16-12
That same night, London Broncos hosted Castleford Tigers in one of the few games not to see a card as the visitors won 34-20 thanks to braces from Alex Mellor and Innes Senior. It marked a second straight win for Cas and they’ll aim to build on it with a home tie against Catalans up next.
A night prior to those two games, Warrington Wolves hosted Leeds Rhinos as Brad Arthur watched on from the coaching box alongside Chev Walker. Warrington’s first five and last five minutes of the first half seemed to blitz Leeds and help secure the 30-18 win despite a second-half fightback from the Rhinos.
Saturday boasted three games with the Hull derby the standout pick and that was where the bulk of Super League disciplinary matters took place with Chris Kendall showing four yellow cards as KR won 24-10 to complete the clean sweep over FC this season.
Also that day, Leigh Leopards beat Huddersfield Giants 20-16 and Catalans impressed with a 20-0 win over Salford Red Devils.
Across those six games, ten players were sent to the sin bin with a further one sent off. That man who was red carded was Huddersfield’s Andre Savelio, a player familiar with the Super League disciplinary process after being sent off on debut earlier in the season for the Giants.
His high shot on Robbie Mulhern was deemed worthy of a red card in a game that had already seen Chris Hill and Jack Hughes sent for ten after getting too involved with each other and triggering a skirmish.
A skirmish or a melee was what happened at the MKM Stadium during an incident that saw Brad Fash and Elliot Minchella sin-binned, however, per Minchella and the image that is circulating, Fash had got to grips with Minchella’s manhood which prompted such a reaction.
The Hull KR captain made the allegations after the game and claimed he informed referee Chris Kendall who had not seen the incident. The fate of Brad Fash will be a highly-anticipated one when the Super League disciplinary matters are confirmed.
Also in that game, Denive Balmforth copped a yellow for a late shot that Simon Grix described as pathetic, the interim coach taking aim at his young talent for the lazy technique. Joe Burgess also saw yellow for a professional foul as he slowed the ruck down.
That is what Matty Ashton saw yellow for on Thursday night with the winger being sent to the bin alongside captain George Williams who put in a high tackle and was marched for ten. A day later, Matty Lees did the same with his high tackle after just 58 seconds earning him ten minutes in the bin.
The tenth and final sin bin to be discussed came for London Broncos’ Rhys Kennedy with the Australian sent for ten after showing dissent to referee James Vella, something that will likely lead to just a slap on the wrist when the Super League disciplinary process works out.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

No Wigan players, what's the betting that changes once they have reviewed the videos and Cullen gets involved.
