Can Warrington Wolves bring their Wigan 'hoodoo' to an end?

Got something to discuss about RL in general? Then this is the place to post it.

Can Warrington Wolves bring their Wigan 'hoodoo' to an end?

Post by josie andrews »

WARRINGTON Wolves’ Class of 2024 have got into a happy habit of breaking down barriers.

And on Friday, they will get the chance at another one – and a pretty formidable one at that.

Having ended a five-year wait for a Challenge Cup Final appearance and a seven-game losing run against neighbours St Helens already this year, Sam Burgess’ side will get another crack at ending a similar run against another rival in Wigan Warriors this weekend.

They’ve already had two this year – so will it be third time lucky?

As with games against Saints until this year, clashes with the Warriors in recent years have only brought pain and defeat for Warrington.

A 10-6 victory at Magic Weekend 2021 was the last time they were victorious against Wigan with all seven meetings since then going the way of the Cherry and Whites.

That run includes June’s Challenge Cup Final at Wembley – an 18-8 win for Wigan – and the Super League Round 13 clash that preceded it which Matt Peet’s men edged by a single point (19-18).

Wire will also become the latest team to have a crack at ending the formidable record the Warriors have assembled on home soil.

They have been victorious in their past 17 home fixtures in all competitions, with the last visiting team to record a win at the newly-renamed Brick Community Stadium being Leeds Rhinos, who won 40-18 in May of last year.

Their phenomenal run of home wins actually started against Warrington – a 14-12 Challenge Cup quarter-final win the following month – and also includes a 26-12 Super League victory in July 2023.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
