My 2 pence

Post by Wes »

We look a little jaded at the moment and with a few out it’s difficult to stay fresh.

Smith needs to trust Farrimond instead of trying to do it all, hardly gives him the ball.

Nsemba is a class act in the making but falls off a tackle per game that leads to a try.

Walter’s needs some confidence to build on, was awful in the opening 20 but improved to steady as the game went on, we need more.

Eckersley needs to be smarter on choosing when to pass or run.

We have won the big games this year and it’s impossible to maintain that level of consistency and fitness all season, this is our dip, we need to dig ourselves out and peak again at the back end.

Marshy is all class, his efforts tonight were unreal.

Tyler Dupree class act, was gutted tonight but came over said hello to my daughter had a quick chat, signed nephews top and moved on to other fans and engaged and had photos taken.

We need a few back and to pick ourselves up, insure we will/can.

Yes I thought it was class from Dupree to hop over the fence all to quickly now they file past the east stand and do engage with fans (I’m still waiting for the parade of the WCC)so it was nice to see Tyler going “old school” and stopping with fans even more so after that performance

He’s now introduced me to his Mum tonight as his Nana! 👵🏼🤣🤣

I agree with all this. I think it's worth remembering how difficult it is for a team to peak right at the start of the year, then win the challenge cup and then go on to win the Grand Final. It's rarely done. It's even rarer to have a successful season without a dip in form somewhere along the way.

I think at the moment we're really lacking some cohesion and communication on our right edge and that gave both Hull and Wire the opportunity they need to really get at us. We have Nsemba and Farrimond defending on that edge who don't have the experience and this is part of their learning curve. Last night we also had a makeshift centre in Farrell which makes things even more difficult.

Eckersley also isn't a fullback by preference. He has experience there at academy level but it's a whole different game at this level. I think some of our defensive issues are down to lack of communication and game reading from Eckersley too. Things like communicating with the defenders to number up correctly on each side. It's the sort of thing you don't really notice until it isn't there.

The right edge we have at the moment is a long way from the one that would have been expected at the start of the season with a fully fit squad. We'd have been able to call on the defensive experience of Isa and alongside French and Keighran you'd expect a lot of the miscommunication that happened last night not to happen. That's just the way things go with injuries.

The injury Walters suffered at the start of the year has almost certainly affected his form. You see it so many times that when a players season gets disrupted they find it hard to get back up to speed. I don't think he deserves too much criticism in that respect. The more we play him the better he will get.

When things stop working you need find solutions and unfortunately for Matt Peet our injuries are robbing him of potential solutions for the next few weeks. O'Neill's injury means we can't try Leeming in the halves to give Farrimond a break. Field and French being out means we can't try Keighran in the halves. If Keighran still has issues from the head knock then we can't change things up in the back row much either.

In some ways maybe the lack of options will be a blessing in disguise. It's a challenge for the players we have right now. It's a challenge for Farrimond and if he could bounce back with a good performance next week it could be the making of him. There could be an argument that trying to change things too much is just going to be disruptive. If you keep things as consistent as possible then hopefully when players do return they can slot back in seamlessly. A bit of short term pain might be good for us.

And as a bit of reassurance, in 2013 we won the double after finishing 4th. Our record that year in the last 9 regular season games was 7 defeats and 2 wins, includes 4 defeats in the last 4 games.

When you're chasing trophies you inevitably end up having a tough time at some point, but as long as you're in the playoffs you have a chance.

Speaking of kicking, isn't Farrimond right-footed? I thought of him when Smith was lining up one of those conversions from the left-touch-line that you just know he isn't going to make.

Farrimond is a cracking goal kicker can’t understand why he isn’t utilised more!

Farrimond was hardly used at all.
Field kicking is an obvious one. Harry being our only field kicker is being put under too much pressure meaning a poor kick and a good position for the opposition to start their set.
Jack has to be used as field kicker or as a runner/kicker with a switch pass which we used to do a lot.

MP says we need to be better next week. That means making changes.
The interceptions looked from the replay that Wire have seen us do it a lot when attacking and had anticipated it, practiced it and were waiting for the cut out pass.

How many tries were a gift will disturb the coaching staff.
Normally in a season you've played everyone once. Then you need to change and improve so the opposition can't anticipate too much what they're going to face.

Onward and upward next week.
Probably the only one but looking forward to it already.
We have a very good team who have just produced two woeful performances. Winning the next three will be a real challenge. Let's see how we go!

I agree completely Ted. If you’re going to play Farrimond, then use him. Put some doubt in the opposition’s minds.
Will Smith kick ?, will he pass to Farrimond who may kick or may run ?. Farrimond is a nightmare for defenders with his step.
If the opposition are unsure what is going to happen, then it will create more time/ space for Smith if he wants to kick.
At the moment everyone knows what is going to happen, so it is simple to defend against.

It’ll be reet. Back to basics. Respect the golden egg and tighten up our defence and things will come together.
