Jack Welsby's grim injury layoff confirmed as St Helens' play-off hopes take another blow

Post by josie andrews »

Welsby has suffered a serious injury.

St Helens star Jack Welsby will miss the vast majority of Super League's remaining rounds. The star fullback limped off in the defeat to Leigh Leopards and scans have confirmed he has suffered a hamstring tendon injury.

Welsby is now set to miss eight weeks of action, meaning the Saints will be without one of their key players for all but one of their remaining games as they fight to retain their place in the top six. Saints are currently just sixth, two points ahead of Leeds Rhinos in seventh.

Compounding the issue is a three-match suspension to Jonny Lomax, while Moses Mbye is also managing a knee injury, leaving them struggling extensively in the halves.

I don't need to sit here and talk about the importance of Jack Welsby," head coach Paul Wellens said. "It's disappointing for us and disappointing for him. But the situation is what it is, Jack has to work hard now to come back for the end of the year and we have to adapt to offset the loss of Jack."

In better news, Morgan Knowles is set to return to action this week, while Wellens is hopeful that Joe Batchelor will be available for selection too. That will help fix some of the issues the club has been managing in the pack, but it's the spine that is now becoming an issue.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Regardless of who he plays for, I'd always want to see the best players play
