Disciplinary Round 21
The Super League players facing bans including Wigan Warriors, St Helens stars
Round 21 of the Super League season could end up being one of the most costly yet for a number of clubs, who are sweating on disciplinary outcomes ahead of Magic Weekend.
There were a number of notable flashpoints across the six games, all of which could lead to some significant bans that would leave some of Super League’s best players not only missing out at Elland Road, but for the weeks beyond that, too.
Here’s the players who will be fearing the worst suspension-wise.
Harry Smith (Wigan Warriors)
Without doubt the biggest talking point from a disciplinary perspective over the weekend was the red card shown to Wigan and England scrum-half Smith during the latter stages of the Warriors’ dismal defeat at Headingley on Saturday afternoon.
Smith was rightly sent off following a shot on James Bentley during the latter stages of Wigan’s 30-4 loss to Leeds Rhinos, and Matt Peet could now be facing up to the prospect of being without Smith for a number of weeks. It would certainly be no surprise if Smith were handed a lengthy ban.
He is one of several players that will be sweating on Monday’s disciplinary verdict.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

That was a nasty petulant act by Smith I hope he’s got his goalkeeping gloves because I suspect they’re going to throw the book at him

Re: Harry Smith
It’s a big blow but he needed a few weeks out of the firing line, hasn’t played well for a couple of months now and it could be a blessing in disguise for him. If Peet has any sense we’ll line up with
1. Field
3. Eckersley
6. Keighran
7. Farrimond

DISCIPLINARY

Harry Smith Grade E - striking - likely to be 3 matches at least from the tribunal - decision to come.
Liam Farrell £250 Fine 'Other Contrary Behaviour' - god knows what that was for.
LEEDS - Nothing - Nada - absolutely innocent of all wrongdoing - nothing to see here - is that OK Gary?
Morgan Knowles 2 match ban - Wait for the inevitable appeal

The Match Review Panel have met and given their verdict on Super League disciplinary matters after Round 21 and ahead of Magic Weekend.
Four bans were handed out in Round 20 with Cam Smith, Tim Lafai, Jordan Lane and Brad Fash all being handed one-match bans but all four will be back in action for the upcoming Magic Weekend fixtures.
The same probably can’t be said for several other Super League players after a whooping 12 sin bins and one red card was shown throughout the Round 21 fixtures, likely creating a very busy schedule for the disciplinary team to sort out
Thursday’s game saw St Helens edge Salford 17-16 with four yellows shown, whilst Friday night saw a further three sin bins across the two games as Hull KR beat Castleford and more drop goal drama as Catalans beat Huddersfield 23-22.
Saturday marked the biggest fixture of the Super League round and also the game that will have the biggest disciplinary focus as an ill-disciplined Wigan Warriors lost 30-4 to Leeds Rhinos. Harry Smith saw red and was then shown red after elbowing James Bentley in the face whilst Adam Keighran was also sin-binned.
Sunday’s games saw a further four yellow cards shown as well making for a very busy Match Review Panel. All sin bins from Round 21 can be seen here.

The Match Review Panel’s findings are now in and two players have been handed bans whilst Harry Smith will head to the Operational Rules Tribunal for his offence of striking.
The two players to be banned are Josh Charnley and Morgan Knowles who receive one and two-game bans respectively.
Charnley was hit with a Grade B offence of ‘Contrary Behaviour’ whilst Knowles’ charge of ‘Head Contact’ was ruled as Grade C, hence he was banned for two games.
A further seven players were charged and fined but no bans were administered.
– Josh Charnley (Leigh Leopards) – Grade B Contrary Behaviour – 1 Match Penalty Notice (Higher End)
– Morgan Knowles (St Helens) – Grade C Head Contact – 2 Match Penalty Notice (Higher End)
– Nixon Putt (Castleford Tigers) – Grade B Dangerous Throw/Lift – £250 Fine
– Sauaso Sue (Hull KR) – Grade A Disputes Decision – £250 Fine
– Liam Farrell (Wigan Warriors) – Grade B Other Contrary Behaviour – £250 Fine
– Harry Smith (Wigan Warriors) – Grade E Striking – Refer to Tribunal
– Dean Parata (London Broncos) – Grade B Head Contact – £250 Fine
– Darnell McIntosh (Leigh Leopards) – Grade B Dangerous Throw/Lift – £250 Fine

Re: Disciplinary Round 21
It was always going to be a ban after the striking to the head. Hopefully no more than 3 games then Harry can come back fresh and fully firing for the game against KR in early September. It’s a blow to lose him but at least he’s not injured so will be back for the business end of the run in. Time for the coaching team to step up and organise the backs…with Saints missing Lomax, Knowles and Welsby, we’ve got more than enough in the squad to win this game on Saturday but they al need to step up, led by TL.
I’d also go with:
1. Field
3.Eckersley
6. Keighran (at least he avoided a ban this time around)
7. Farrimond
Then show a bit more adventure with the ball and stop running it up all the time with just one man and no support runners. Come on Wigan…time to shut everyone up this Saturday and show the others we’re still the team to fear, even without Bevan!
