St Helens swoop for Lewis Murphy as winger prepares for Super League return

Post by josie andrews »

Murphy is on the verge of securing a Super League return.

Lewis Murphy is on the brink of joining St Helens, Rugby League Live can reveal. A deal has been agreed for the winger to join Saints next season, with formalities now being worked through in order for the deal to be completed.

The winger headed to Sydney Roosters last year after an impressive breakthrough with Wakefield Trinity. However, he is now returning to Super League with the Saints, who had marked him as a target and have now landed their man.

Murphy headed to the Roosters hoping to break into the NRL, but the arrival of Dom Young and the form of Daniel Tupou has restricted his options. Now, however, he returns to Super League determined to prove a point and will do so with St Helens, who have been looking to enhance their backline heading into 2025.

With Tommy Makinson departing, Waqa Blake and Konrad Hurrell off-contract and nobody nailing down the second wing position, Saints' focus has been placed on their three-quarter line. That is now starting to come together, with Kyle Feldt brought in to replace Makinson, and Murphy will look to nail down the other spot.

Beyond that, another centre now appears likely to be a focus, though that may change depending on the future of Blake and Hurrell. However, with Tristan Sailor also arriving, at least one of the club's current overseas players will need to depart.

22-year-old Murphy made his debut in 2022 for Wakefield and quickly showed off his talent, ending the season with an outstanding return of 19 tries in 21 games. That was enough to secure him a move to the Roosters in 2024, though 2023 was brought to a premature end after an ACL injury.

He has played seven games in the New South Wales Cup this year, scoring one try. However, he is now set to return to the UK tasked with helping the Saints in their quest for silverware.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Wasn't Murphy about to join Saints and then went to the NRL?
