The offside law seemed to have been suspended; high tackles by HKR were waved through with a cheery grin and just about every lousy decision was made on the night.
Perhaps the worst thing was when Budgie was trying to usher the ball into touch; it bounced on his foot and not helped by the touch judge who was 5 yards away and seemingly stricken blind, Smith (I'm assuming) decided that it hadn't been played at(?) and gave HKR the scrum. Truly that man shouldn't be allowed near a SL match again.
Because he hadn't played at it. JB didn't even move his foot, the ball just struck it. And that's the rule. Would have been the same if it'd just struck his shin, say.
But Budgie had moved towards the ball with intent to play, deciding at the last not to play because it was likely to go into touch, which it didn't until it had struck his foot. If it had happened behind the posts, surely the result would have been a goal-line dropout.
If you are shielding the ball then surely its up to the defender to avoid touching it

I can, don’t use the VR and let the referee do the job he is paid for.
That's fair enough, but would we all accept the decisions that were shown to be terribly incorrect when shown on replay after replay? If we do then fine, but if the coaches complain more about reverting to the on report system than they do about the mechanism of using the VR to get more correct decisions, then it's worse. Remember when players were banned and the team then offended against had no advantage? Fans certainly didn't like that.

I dreaded the use of VR and so it’s come to pass a weak official such as jack smith doesn’t back himself (not talking about Friday so much) he always seemingly goes to the VR for everything and its tiresome let the the ref,ref the game and not keep constantly go to the video ref

Why can’t the referee just check replays on the big screen, now all games are televise, instead of going to the VR immediately.

I’ve seen referees look at the big screen replays before & made a decision or sometimes changed their minds.

The scrutiny of referee's decisions is more detailed then ever.
Unless they are absolutely certain then they use the VR.
Typical example from last Friday was Joe Burgess's try from Hiku's break. Hiku broke so fast with Burgess following him that the ref had no chance of keeping up. Smith went to the VR as he said he was unsighted on the grounding. OK when there's no problem but imagine if Burgess had fumbled it, Smith not gone to the VR and allowed it. Us Wigan fans (me included) would have complained for ever and the RFL & Referees would never have heard the last of it.

Us species have wanted RL to have the latest tech and then when it's used to try and make sure the correct match decisions are made we all start complaining. I'm the same as everyone when it seems time after time the ref goes to the VR. Pity the poor ref who didn't go to the VR and got it wrong.

Improve procedures progressively but keep what's available to ensure games end with correct decisions and fair results.

hiku was offside and the try should have been brought back

I hate to be the one saying this again, but it works a lot better in the NRL, helped a lot by clearly far superior technology. Instances like JB's try mentioned above, where the ref is unsighted, he could give the try and the game goes on. Meanwhile, the bunker is checking just in case there's anything untoward. I'm OK with, whatever gives us the correct result, as long as they're fairly quick about it.

And what do they do if they decide that it’s not a try? Do they then disallow it?

No Josie, in the NRL they aren’t allowed to kick the conversion until the try is confirmed by the bunker.
