Re: Penalty Stats
Nicky Kiss posted some good stats. Out of 25 SL games we have been on the wrong end of the penalty count on 20 occasions. As he rightly says, that blows the theory out of the water that Wigan born referees are biased towards us.

Re: Penalty Stats
The fact that we have conceded most penalties, and the two teams closest to us have conceded least leads to one of two conclusions:
• Refs are biased against us.
• We have a deliberate policy of playing "close to the edge".
No-one will be convinced to change their mind, but I think it's the second option. And I don't care as long as we're top and Wire and Rovers are 2nd and 3rd.
I don't mean I want us to be a dirty team, but it's a coaching decision whether it's best to play close to the line or avoid penalties at all costs.
More stats for you to consider on red and yellow cards:
Wigan 3R 11Y
HKR 0R 10Y
War 2R 13Y

Spot on Morley, like it or not Wigan bring a lot of this on themselves and that says to me it’s the coaches promoting this in trainingmorley pie eater wrote: ↑Mon Sep 09, 2024 8:35 pm The fact that we have conceded most penalties, and the two teams closest to us have conceded least leads to one of two conclusions:

Re: Penalty Stats
Whether anyone is promoting it or not I am not worried as long as we keep winning.

it don't half make far more work for the team doing it this way thoughCharriots Offiah wrote: ↑Mon Sep 09, 2024 10:30 pm Whether anyone is promoting it or not I am not worried as long as we keep winning.

Re: Penalty Stats
We do play close to the edge - in a hard contact sport where dominating and controlling a collision and ptb are key that seems almost inevitable so it's interesting to see that Wire and KR are much less penalised than us.
We've had more than our fair share of petulant penalties which are just ill discipline or frustration, Harry and Tyler come immediately to mind. I think this is the area we need to work on.
Regarding ref's, i'm sure there is no conscious bias but it's plain that there are incidents missed in every game -the KR game for example in the 1st half there were at least two maybe three clear head high tackles coming off our line on Marshall, Miski and I think Adam, obvious pens but KR come away with only one penalty against them in the 1st half - really ?
Interesting that the narrative across the board is that Wigan are favoured by having lots of home refs i it would be good if Sky spent a couple of mins analysing the pens against all teams this season in one of their shows........

Re: Penalty Stats
Whats probably most interesting is 13% (22) of all our penalties this season where committed by Harry Smith
In fact he is the leading the penalty table for the league
Other members of the top 20 are Liam Farrell (15) and Brad O'Neill (12)
I know its not this simple but if you remove Harry's penalties alone we would drop from 1st to 4th in the league for penalties.
I say its interesting because you'd imagine if it was just to being close to the edge it would be bigger more aggressive players leading the way
I dont think refs are bias either way - i think there is in general poor standards but thats another matter

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure
Re: Penalty Stats
Which highlights the point that those pens aren't all pinching a bit on the ten metres, or staying in the tackle a second or two too long; dissent and petulance and stupid acts of foul play also come into it, and these are the ones that can and should be largely eliminated.Wigan_forever1985 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 10, 2024 10:03 am Whats probably most interesting is 13% (22) of all our penalties this season where committed by Harry Smith
