Huddersfield Giants plan stadium move away from John Smith's Stadium as early details emerge

Post by josie andrews »

The Giants look set to leave the John Smith's Stadium at some point in the future.

Huddersfield Giants owner Ken Davy has outlined plans for the club to leave the John Smith's Stadium and build their own purpose-built stadium. Davy, who will return as club chairman moving forward, revealed the club was looking to relocate at the club's end of season awards evening on Monday night.

The Giants have played at the John Smith's Stadium since its opening in 1994 but have struggled to attract crowds to fill out the facility, which has a capacity of 24,500. The Giants share the facility with Huddersfield Town, but the football club are in the process of taking control of the facility.

The Giants confirmed Davy's announcement via X, with questions naturally being raised regarding potential locations for such a stadium. Huddersfield previously played at Fartown, but eventually moved as the facility deteriorated.

A smaller venue would be more suitable for the Giants, though there aren't a number of obvious locations within the town. But a more suitable stadium for their needs would be well-received by supporters and the sport in general. Rival fans have criticised the stadium for being too big for the Giants' purpose, and as a result, struggling to deliver a good atmosphere.

Yorkshire Live has contacted Kirkless Council for comment.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
