Super League set to break 20-year attendance record with growth clear to see

Post by josie andrews »

It's more good news for the competition!

The Super League play-off game between Wigan Warriors and Leigh Leopards is set to break a record intact for 20 years on Saturday. The two teams will battle it out for a place in the Grand Final on Saturday and is set to become the latest record-breaker in what has been a superb few weeks for the competition.

The Warriors have confirmed that over 17,000 have already been sold for the game at the Brick Community Stadium meaning it is set to become the highest-attended play-off game since 2004 should they be able to sell a small number of tickets before Saturday.

The play-offs peaked from an attendance perspective in 2004, when three games were played in front of crowds in excess of 20,000.

Since then, the highest-attended play-off game was in 2010, when 17,699 attended a Hull derby at the MKM Stadium. As such, if Wigan can surpass that figure, they are on course to make more history in what has been a positive period for Super League.

Salford Red Devils broke their attendance record for their play-off game against Leigh last week while the game between Warrington Wolves and St Helens attracted the highest television audience for a play-off game since they were introduced in 1998.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
