I suspect in Martin’s case is his age 32/33 or so probably wanted a decent contract so a no go for them but silly it seems to me

Re: Coach of the year
i'll probably buck the trend a little here (although i do believe Matty should have won it having just cleaned up), in that the best coach isnt always the one that has won something /everything. Mike Eccles at London has done an outstanding job with the resources he had available to him, and i would also bring Paul Rowley into the conversation at Salford, again losing the majority of his best players, and signing the unwanted / journeyman type player to get them into the play offs
Willie Peters has a very good squad at his disposal, so to come 2nd and get to the GF, whilst being an achievement imo doesnt warrant coach of the year. He has Gildart and Opacic from his backline not in the team at weekend, so that shows he's not done it with just a thread bare squad with little talent available
i would have applauded Rowley or Eccles but not Peters in this instance (although i do rate him as a coach and the style he has Rovers playing)
one final mention to our friends over the hill in St Helens - Paul Wellens should be in there to for the job he's doing following on from KFC as legends and then killing the 1st team off

Agree about Peters. He and his team are not in the same bracket as London or Salford as HKR are far better resourced. HKR have an owner who has been prepared to invest in his team and has given Peter’s a very good squad. He under achieved if anything.the pieman wrote: ↑Mon Oct 14, 2024 8:50 am i'll probably buck the trend a little here (although i do believe Matty should have won it having just cleaned up), in that the best coach isnt always the one that has won something /everything. You probably could make a case for Rowley or Eccles above Peter’s this season quite easily. Could you make a case for them over Peet this season? Not in my opinion. Peet has just won the lot. Four trophies in one calendar year. The fact one of them was only won after the prize was given out doesn’t make the fact the award went to Peter’s look any less stupid.
The fact Wigan won all four has even made Sky News I see and I think if those outside the sport knew Peet wasn’t named coach of the year they would be baffled. Only those running RL can fail to recognise such an achievement.
Maybe they expected or hoped HKR would win and then there would be less debate.

Re: Coach of the year
Its tough and maybe we are quibbling but there is a case to answer.
Peet has won it all....without two big impact players at times....brought young talent such as Eckersley, Forber, Farrimond and Nsemba into the team without a drop in standards....what does he need to do?
I can accept Lewis as MoS as it was brought in to celebrate a player who has carried his team more than the most eye-catching player - so its true to that...

Re: Coach of the year
on a side note - two of the coaches mentioned on this thread Peet and Eccles - neither played professional rugby - i find that amazing as it seems like nearly every other coach in the past is an ex player
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure
Re: Coach of the year
I'm not bothered Peters got it. He's clearly improving HKR and deserves credit for how close they got. However he doesn't get that credit next season. His level is now success = a GF win and no less.

Mike, I think you've hit that on the head, there.
Watching the game again, HKR came very close to scoring and possibly played the yardage game better, Smith's kicking kept them away from our line. He has improved them over the year and its a very close call between the two coaches.
Re: Coach of the year
They did get close you’re right but Wigan didn’t even look to me at least in the least bit threatened by them huff and bluster if the way I felt KR attack threat waswiddenoldboy wrote: ↑Wed Oct 16, 2024 8:59 amMike, I think you've hit that on the head, there.

I think in some part all the team needs credit for the defence, but Miski did a great job a couple of times on Ryan Hall, where you'd have put your mortgage on Hall scoring. There was 1 in particular i think in the 1st half, where the ball had worked to Hall and Miski nailed him, & with cover put him into touch. Another he let him catch the ball, but hit him as soon as he had, and Field mopped up the loose ball.widdenoldboy wrote: ↑Wed Oct 16, 2024 11:27 amWatching it again, againfozzie58 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 16, 2024 11:01 amThey did get close you’re right but Wigan didn’t even look to me at least in the least bit threatened by them huff and bluster if the way I felt KR attack threat waswiddenoldboy wrote: ↑Wed Oct 16, 2024 8:59 am

I know wingers are normally praised for their defensive efforts, but Miski certainly stood up when needed at weekend
