Lockers and Tommy

Post by Wiganer Ted »

The quite remarkable achievement of winning all four trophies in one year has brought well deserved publicity and recognition for Matty Peet, Rads, the players and back room staff. Not forgetting our owner Mike Danson.

What I have not heard is any mention of our two assistant coaches Lockers and Tommy.

So much has been said of the last four matches and not conceding a single try. Great credit to the players. What about a mention for our defence coach, Lockers? Also we have played and won the last two Grand Finals without conceding a try. That, to me, is a quite staggering achievement. I'm in no doubt that we wouldn't have done that without the expertise of one Sean O'Loughlin.

Our attack has also looked so much better with players seemingly better able to break down the opposition's defence. For decades like most teams we seemed to struggle against teams who went down to 12 players. It is not uncommon for that 12 man team to score when the 13 team side doesn't. That certainly disappeared when we recently played HKR at home.
In both cases we scored from what appeared to be a pre planned structure. In one instance by moving HKR from right to left and then back again. They were pulled both ways, couldn't recover and we scored. Also we played on the 6th when the winger had dropped back. With our massive pace HKR were simply outnumbered on their right defence for both of Marshall's tries. It was that win over HKR more than any other that won us the LLS.
This improvement is down to, IMO, Thomas Leuluai.

When applauding the club and winning the four trophies let's not forget to thank to both Lockers and Tommy.

Matt Peet made special mention to his assistant coaches especially Lockers for the defence.

And I was ridiculed for years about my adulation of Sean O’Loughlin & his capabilities as a player from being 17 years old 😉
Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Very good coaching team, I admit I was wrong about them and Peet at the beginning and long may they continue to deliver the goods

Some may remember me not being a fan of Lockers, that wasn't 100 percent it just looked that way due to the obsession of one or two others on this site 8-)

Ive been wrong about a few things, but looks like everything has clicked over the last 2-3 years.

I thought Rads was completely out his depth but he now seems like he is a sure hand

i felt like Lockers and Tommy should have had to earn their place by coaching somewhere else and they clearly showed they were well up to the task

I thought Peet was a "cheap" option and he turned out to be one of our best coaches yet

I also said S.Powell would never get pickedup by a top end club and wire signed him

in short - if i say something its probably the opposite thats true
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure

Don’t jump back on the Lockers fan club now Josie, don’t forget, Bevan is your favourite now. 😧😧😧

Great post, Ted - with you all the way.

I also applaud those who admit they were wrong. None of us are right all the time, and I was even wrong once

I had doubts about Radlinski, though always thought he was a nice bloke. What he's done with Bevan, for example, is not only 100% right and admirable, but has resulted in us keeping him for longer. I also thought Bevan should stay at full-back where he was best.

Dare I ask the question, what ambitions to Lockers and Tommy have? Could we lose them as they become head coaches elsewhere?

Most interviews I have watched or read with Matty, Rads or players they all mention or thank Tommy and Lockers. Good one was when Matty was praising Lockers for our D and then said it also helps when our attack coach was also probably the best tackler to have played the game :D
