The Tigers have sacked the head coach after just one year
Castleford Tigers have sacked Craig Lingard with the West Yorkshire club parting ways after just one season in charge.
Lingard was named head coach following a disappointing 2023 campaign that saw Castleford finish second from bottom. This season saw them slightly improve and finish tenth, with Lingard earning popularity among the fanbase after an open and transparent plan to get the club back up the Super League table.
But days since Martin Jepson took ownership of the club, Lingard has been told this Monday morning that his services are no longer required. Rugby League Live understands the players were informed at 1:00pm to a great deal of surprise, with Castleford then releasing a short statement.
Confirming the process to appoint a new coach head is already underway; the club hopes to make an appointment soon, with Jepson confirming it wasn't an 'easy decision' with the call made to add a 'different voice' to the dressing room.
The statement read: "I would like to thank Craig for all his hard work over the past year as head coach and in his previous role as assistant head coach. I would like to wish Craig the very best of luck for the future.
"This wasn't an easy decision. Craig is a really decent guy and is well liked by our fans, but I felt it was time for a different direction and a new voice in the dressing room. The players are due back in a few weeks, and I wanted to give a new coach the opportunity to shape pre-season and create a winning culture of his own. The search for a new head coach is underway, and we hope to make an announcement soon."
The statement made no comment on assistant coach duo Danny McGuire and Scott Murrell.
Meanwhile, Castleford expect their Super League status to be confirmed at Wednesday's IMG grading reveal. The Tigers were placed 13th in last year's provisional scores but are understood to have made up the ground over the past year. The only change to the topflight is believed to be local rivals Wakefield Trinity, who will replace London Broncos.

Castleford Tigers make surprise sacking decision as players told shock news
Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Castleford Tigers swoop for Hull KR assistant as Danny McGuire decision made after Lingard sacking
Hull Kingston Rovers current assistant coach Brett Delaney is being lined up by Castleford with former interim boss Danny McGuire expected to become head coach
Hull Kingston Rovers assistant coach Brett Delaney is being lined up to join Castleford Tigers - with former Robins interim coach Danny McGuire expected to be named as their head coach.
Delaney is set to join the Castleford coaching staff after Craig Lingard was surprisingly sacked as head coach, with the ex-Leeds Rhinos star now set to link up once again with current Tigers assistant coach McGuire, who will be promoted to head coach..
Hull Live understands work is under way regarding an exit by Delaney from Rovers, where he has been a driving force in revolutionising their defence into an impressive unit. McGuire left Rovers, where he was assistant coach, at the end of the 2023 season, having been interim head coach in 2022 before Willie Peters' arrival at the club.
McGuire is understood to be being lined up as Lingard's replacement and will be tasked with lifting the club up the Super League table under a new boardroom structure led by a new owner on Martin Jepson, who stamped his mark on the club immediate in sacking Lingard.
McGuire became a Rovers player in 2018 before joining the coaching staff under previous Robins head coach Tony Smith ahead of the 2021 season.
Lingard had led the club to a 10th-placed finish in Super League after taking over following an 11th-placed finish the previous season, when he was assistant to Andy Last. Former Keighley and Batley boss Lingard had taken charge on a two-year deal, but departs early with Jepson saying it "wasn't an easy decision" but he wanted a "new voice".
At the time of McGuire's departure from Hull KR, the club's chief executive Paul Lakin said: "Danny has played a key role in the club’s journey to becoming a top Super League club. We will always be grateful for Danny’s contributions as a player and then during his three seasons as Assistant Head Coach, particularly as Interim Head Coach during a difficult time for the club. We’d like to wish Danny all the best for the next chapter in his coaching journey."

TIGERSCastleford Tigers confirm new head coach after shock Lingard exit
CASTLEFORD TIGERSCastleford Tigers confirm new head coach after shock Lingard exitby Sam Cook October 25, 2024
Castleford Tigers have confirmed the appointment of their new head coach after Craig Lingard’s shock exit.
Despite guiding the Tigers to a 10th-placed finish with far more points than in 2023, Lingard was relieved of his duties on Monday with new owner Martin Jepson wasting no time to put his own stamp on the club.
Just days later and Jepson has got his man to replace Lingard with Castleford Tigers confirming that assistant coach Danny McGuire will ascend to the head coaching role after signing a three-year deal.
McGuire had been heavily touted as the man to replace Lingard and that has now been confirmed with the former Leeds Rhinos playing legend making waves in the coaching sphere.
Prior to joining Castleford Tigers as an assistant coach for the 2023 season, the former Rhino had been a coach at Hull KR, taking on an interim role before then serving as an assistant under Willie Peters.
Factor in his decorated playing career and there will be few men better schooled to take on a Super League head coaching role, something that Martin Jepson seems to believe.
Castleford Tigers confirmed the appointment with a statement revealed via their website and chief among those to speak on the appointment was Jepson.
He stated: “I am delighted to announce the appointment of Danny McGuire as Head Coach of Castleford Tigers. I am sure that Danny will be able to call on all his experience over many years in the game, for what will be his first Head Coach role.”
“I have been hugely impressed with Danny’s ambition, his determination, and his technical knowledge of the game and I look forward to working alongside him. I am also sure Danny will be able to help attract like-minded players to the Club as we continue to build for next season. Danny will be able to select and appoint an Assistant Coach.”
Danny McGuire added: “I am really excited and feel privileged to be given the opportunity to be Head Coach of Castleford Tigers. I am looking forward to a strong pre-season and getting the players ready to represent the Club and fans with pride.”
McGuire will have a strong platform to build on with the club having focused much of the 2024 season on getting players in under the table and earning them experience. They did so on a budget that was £700,000 below the cap, as revealed by Craig Lingard this week.
Now, with the former Leeds man at the helm, they’ll look to add further with Jepson specifically citing McGuire’s ability to “help attract like-minded players”. Of course, all of that recruitment will be done as a Grade A club with Castleford Tigers sneaking about the 15-point barrier in Wednesday’s announcement,
The off-field work and ability for the club to raise their attendance above the 7,500 average has seen them earn Grade A status in a week that has also seen them bought out and land a new head coach.

Re: Castleford Tigers make surprise sacking decision as players told shock news
I'm sure it wasn't really a 'shock' at all. Must have been weird for Lingard, though, he must have twigged that the long-term plan was to replace him with McGuire.
