Shaun Wane makes two changes to England squad as injury status confirmed

Post by josie andrews »

England host Samoa in the second Test this Saturday.

England winger Dom Young will sit out Saturday's second Test against Samoa after succumbing to a recent injury. Shaun Wane confirmed earlier this week that Young picked up a knock during Sunday's first Test at Wigan, with the Sydney Roosters star now ruled out with a hand issue.

However, there is a place for Matty Ashton. The Warrington Wolves speedster, who scored two tries in the 34-18 victory last week, is named despite also picking up a knock, with Wigan Warriors winger Liam Marshall primed to take Young's spot.

Naming his 19-man squad for the Headingley clash, Wane will also welcome back Luke Thompson after the prop served his one-match suspension from the Super League Grand Final. Tom Burgess also makes way, while Chris Hill, Morgan Smithies, and Danny Walker are the other players to miss out.

Elsewhere, Junior Nsemba and Ben Currie are included once again. Nsemba is still to debut on the international scene, while Currie was the 18th Man in Wigan.

England 19-man squad: Matty Ashton, John Bateman, Daryl Clark, Ben Currie, Herbie Farnworth, Ethan Havard, Morgan Knowles, Matty Lees, Mikey Lewis, Liam Marshall, Mike McMeeken, Harry Newman, Junior Nsemba, Kai Pearce-Paul, Victor Radley, Harry Smith, Luke Thompson, Jack Welsby, George Williams

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Hopefully Liam Marshall will get the start.

He won't let anyone down and it would be great for him.

Love watching him play. His post-contact metres are unreal for a guy of his size; so strong.

Thought all our players performed really well. Marshall was top-class throughout; Junior was impressive but I thought he picked up a nasty knock after about an hour (hope he's OK); Harry looked world-class and ran the match despite the usual Williams love-in among commentators; Luke Thompson was awesome (as usual) and Ethan Havard was typically unmentioned and underrated.
If fit, Jake Wardle would be much better than Newman who, like, Welsby, is living on a reputation from a long time ago.
A much better match (and better refereed) than the first one. Liked the well-informed commentary about "the Wigan trio" in the squad!

And that Farnworth's a bit useful!

Wardle would be an upgrade, but Newman played pretty well I think. Better than his last outing, certainly.
