Salford Red Devils land deal for Wigan Warriors forward amid takeover talks
Exclusive: The Reds have secured a new addition for 2025.
Salford Red Devils have agreed a deal with Wigan Warriors to sign forward Tiaki Chan. Rugby League Live can reveal that the two clubs have struck a deal that will see the Warriors player join the Reds on loan.
Chan, who joined the Warriors from Catalans Dragons last year, is understood to have linked up with the Reds for training yesterday after the two clubs came to terms on a deal.
With Salford under enhanced special measures, a deal would have to be approved by the Rugby Football League, however, terms have been agreed between both clubs and Chan looks set to be a late addition to Paul Rowley's squad ahead of the new campaign.
The deal is more complicated as Salford were issued a sustainability cap of £1.2million as a result of their current issues and that is thought to still be in place. However, with Salford progressing with their takeover talks, the hope is that it will be lifted ahead of the new season. Furthermore, it's unclear at this stage whether Salford are financially contributing towards the deal, which hypothetically could allow them to register Chan without him counting under the sustainability cap.
Since his arrival at the DW Stadium, ( they forgot its name change to The Brick! ) 24-year-old Chan has made two appearances for the Warriors but also spent time on loan at Hull FC last season, making nine appearances for the Black and Whites.
Before that, he had made his breakthrough in Perpignan, debuting for Catalans in 2022 and making 16 appearances for the club. Chan has predominantly played from the bench during his career but has featured in the front-row and back-row.

Mate you just saved me typing the exact same words I really don’t see him having a long term future at the club

What is the length of time of Chan's loan?

The whole Salford financial circumstances make this look odd.
They have been told to reduce their salary cost by unloading players. Now they have signed Chan on loan.
It seems either he has arrived at Salford with no cost attached or, Salford have unloaded a highly paid player to allow them to afford Chan.
The other scenario is that the rumoured takeover has all but been completed and Salford's financial future is secure.
I do hope it's the latter.

We seem to be doing too much of this, getting players in, only to ship them out on loan, no idea why they keep doing it.

What I couldn’t get my head round was that they went to Portugal for warm weather training the other week! Where did that money come from?

I didn't realise that Chan was 24. How old was he when we signed him? I'd assumed he was a young lad with potential and time on his side. Given his age and the lack of first team appearances to date, it looks very much like either a poor signing or one that's not worked for some other reason. How long a contact does he have?
