Wigan Warriors star Jai Field opens up on his future ahead of the 2025 Super League season

Post by josie andrews »

WIGAN WARRIORS star is “not too sure” where his future lies beyond the 2025 Super League season.

The Australian speedster is out of contract at the end of the year, with Field lighting up the northern hemisphere since his move from the Parramatta Eels ahead oft he 2021 season.

Since then, the 27-year-old has registered 45 tries in 76 appearances and has formed a formidable partnership with fellow Aussie Bevan French.

However, with Field’s deal running out this year, he is unsure what is in store for him beyond that.

“I’m not too sure really – I’ve only got this year left and then we’ll see what happens after that but I’m open to anything,” Field told NRL.com.

“If something came up to go home you’d obviously think about it but… you’d be leaving here as well, which is a great club. You’ve got to weigh things up when the time comes, I guess.”

Of course, with Wigan the defending champions, Field knows that every Super League side will now be gunning for them.

“We’ve had the same squad now for three or four years so we have that continuity already. It makes it easier. You come back and you just jump straight into where you left off.

“The previous years we were the ones who were chasing after it. This year people are going to be coming after us, the top teams. Everyone wants to knock you off so you get the best version of everyone, every time you play them. Everyone wants to test themselves against us.”

I'd absolutely hate to see Jai leave us for the NRL and struggle. He's good enough not to, but it's a possibility. Obviously we'd all love to see him put pen to paper on a long term deal like French, but I wouldn't begrudge him getting another crack at the NRL.

I’d would like him to stay also. Come on Rads get him a contract signed up with Bevan 😊🏉🍒⚪️

I've got a feeling it's an NRL clause as this was announced last year? https://wiganwarriors.com/blog/2024/01/ ... -new-deal/ deal until end of 2027..

Also totallrl reported on this last year in a behind the deal article https://www.loverugbyleague.com/post/in ... m-contract

I thought he’d done a deal long term, but my memory is shocking!

I now remember saying to him that his partner must have agreed to stay as he told me before it was up to her or not if he signed again 😊

I'd like him to stay. I'd have thought that a two year deal would mean that we get his best years. Real pace is a vital part of his game and the coaching staff seem to keep a constant watch on the state of his hamstrings so any more than two extra years may be too generous. If he went at the end of this season I don't think we'd have an in house replacement ready in time and would have to make a big signing.

Just realised that I didn't think about an obvious option if Jai did leave at the end of the season. Bevan could go back to fullback and Farrimond (assuming he continues to progress this season) could replace him at 6. Still prefer Jai to stay but we have to make certain that we don't lose Jack. Not easy balancing these squads is it?

I was watching some old games back the other day, and Bevan wan't too shabby when he was at full-back, was he? Love Jai to stay, though, and not sure there's really a career for him in the NRL.

Could be Jai's year this year. Bevan was obviously outstanding last season, but the year before it was more even between them and two years ago Jai might have even edged it performance-wise. Maybe Bevan has just got the edge, but Jai's try scoring form could come back to him at any moment.
