MATT PEET HAS SHARED HIS EXCITEMENT AHEAD OF THURSDAY NIGHT’S BETFRED SUPER LEAGUE OPENER AGAINST LEIGH LEOPARDS.
19,000 tickets have already been sold for the highly anticipated Battle For The Borough clash which will see The Lathums headline the night alongside an appearance from legendary boxing announcer Michael Buffer in what is set to be Super League’s Greatest Opening Night.
Looking ahead to the Round 1 fixture, Peet said: “It’s going to be a great occasion. There’s so much going on around the game that both Clubs have contributed to over the last few weeks. It’ll be a fixture between two good teams who will be very committed.”
On Leigh Leopards, Peet said: “I know they’re strong. They’ve kept some of their key players who have worked well for them and they have an outstanding coaching team. They’ve certainly recruited what you’d perceive to be quality, and once those players get going they will be a force to reckon.”
Reflecting on the Warriors’ preparations for the season, Peet said: “We’ve done quite a bit different. There’s some key blocks of what we do that’s remained similar, but we used a new facility in Tenerife and the timing of our camp was different. There’s plenty of things around the training ground that have been refreshed and hopefully we have improved as coaches.”
Peet added: “We can’t let what happened last year affect what we do on a daily basis. We move and look forward whilst learning lessons from the season before.”
Sharing an insight into the environment at Robin Park Arena, Peet said: “Fun, hard work, common goals and plenty of honest conversations. I’d like to think we have an environment that demands the best of our players, but encourages them to look after one another as well.”
Limited tickets remain for our Betfred Super League opener against Leigh at The Brick Community Stadium. Don’t miss out on the Greatest Opening Night by securing your tickets online HERE.

Peet previews Leigh
Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Smith on season opener
* Harry Smith on Warriors season opener against Leigh Leopards.
* Smith: “All the hard work we’ve done in pre-season, to finally get the rewards of being able to play the game and do the bit we enjoy doing – it’s exciting.”

WIGAN WARRIORS HALF-BACK HARRY SMITH SPOKE TO THE PRESS AHEAD OF WIGAN’S SEASON OPENER AGAINST LEIGH LEOPARDS THIS THURSDAY 13 FEBRUARY AT THE BRICK COMMUNITY STADIUM (8PM K.O.)
Looking back on a Grand Slam winning 2024 season, Harry Smith reflected on an intense but rewarding season with the Warriors: “Reflecting on it in the off-season, because we were just going from game-to-game, event-to-event, sometimes you don’t quite realise what we achieved so being able to win all four trophies was a remarkable achievement. To be at your best for so long throughout the season and to be able to be at our best for that amount of time is really impressive so that was a big takeaway for me.”
Following an intense pre-season schedule, Smith looked ahead to Thursday’s season opener at The Brick Community Stadium: “All the hard work we’ve done in pre-season, to finally get the rewards of being able to play the game and do the bit we enjoy doing – it’s exciting.
“It’s always a big game, it’s built-up well by both Clubs and the mini rivalry that has been created is brilliant and I think it’ll be a great game.”
On the opposition, he added: “Credit to Leigh and what they’ve done over the past few years to build their squad up, reach the play-offs two years in a row, it’s brilliant and just elevates the whole of Super League with more competition.”
The half-back also spoke about his role within the team: “Some players like myself, Bevan, Jai – it’s three years playing alongside each other now and you learn each others game and you can use that to your advantage. Sometimes you can put stuff on without having to communicate too much. We’re always looking to improve at this Club, we can’t rest on our morals from last year and always try and develop parts of your game – that’s myself, Matty, a young lad coming up from the Academy.”
Harry Smith is sponsored by BlueSky Plumbing.
With 20,000 tickets now sold for The Greatest Opening Night it is sure to be a spectacle at The Brick Community Stadium. Limited tickets remain, secure your seat HERE.
