Super League disciplinary with 14 charged including Hull FC and St Helens trios

Post by josie andrews »

Following the opening round of Super League, the Match Review Panel have met to bring forward the disciplinary charges with a total of 14 players charged.

Super League returned with a bang on Thursday night as records tumbled at the Brick Community Stadium including the highest-ever Round One attendance, the lowest-scoring match and the first 0-0 in 80 minutes.

It was Leigh who came out victorious with Gareth O’Brien’s drop goal in golden point ensuring that the Leopards took home the two points despite only scoring one themselves.

More golden point drama followed on Friday as Hull KR beat Castleford Tigers 19-18, whilst cross-city rivals Hull FC beat Catalans 22-4 in the biggest upset of the round.

Wakefield edging Leeds Rhinos 14-12 was close in terms of the scale of the upset whilst Saturday’s evening game between St Helens and Salford broke records for the wrong reasons with the 82-0 win for Saints marking the largest-ever margin of victory in the competition after Salford named a much-weakened side.

Sunday saw Warrington beat Huddersfield 20-12 but before all eyes can turn to Round Two of Super League, each club will be nervously awaiting today’s disciplinary verdict as the Match Review Panel meet.

The new system means that charges don’t always equate to bans with players earning penalty points which then accrue and see players banned once they hit certain thresholds.

Here are the results of today’s Match Review Panel.

Super League disciplinary results see 14 players charged

The Match Review Panel have confirmed that 14 players have been charged but with the new system that sees charges equals points as opposed to immediate bans, nobody has been banned.

The heaviest charge is a Grade C, which Adam Keighran, Jordan Lane and Mason Lino have all been hit with meaning each man has had 5 points placed on their record.

Liam Farrell has escaped a charge despite being sent to the sin bin for delaying the restart in the loss to Leigh Leopards.

In total, three St Helens and Hull FC men have been charged with each of Huddersfield Giants and Wakefield Trinity seeing two charged.

Hull KR, Catalans Dragons, Leeds Rhinos and Wigan Warriors are the other four teams to see players charged.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Seems to be the new way doesn’t it amass points and in as all game show rules know “points win prizes” in RL players case that prize will be a hefty ban

so, just so i understand the new system the players are going to get constantly punished??

"Once a player receives a certain amount of points then the respective punishment will be handed down. Bans start being enforced after six or more points on the system and cap out at a twelve-match ban for 54 or more points.

The points tariff is as follows:

– 0-2 No further action
– 3-5 Fine
– 6-8 1 match suspension
– 9-11 1 match suspension and a fine
– 12-14 2 match suspension
– 15-17 2 match suspension and a fine
– 18-20 3 match suspension
– 21-23 3 match suspension and a fine
– 24-26 4 match suspension
– 27-29 4 match suspension and a fine
– 30-32 5 match suspension
– 33-35 5 match suspension and a fine
– 36-38 6 match suspension and a fine
– 39-41 7 match suspension and a fine
– 42-44 8 match suspension and a fine
– 45-47 9 match suspension and a fine
– 48-50 10 match suspension and a fine
– 51-53 11 match suspension and a fine
– 54 + 12 match suspension plus and a fine

It’s important to note that points do not reset after a ban has been served so for example, if a player hits 26 points, they will serve a four-match ban. Upon returning to play, if they are charged with a Grade C offence (worth five points) then that takes them to a five-match ban automatically."

The accrual of points continues, so if you get a 4 game ban, and then commit another offence, you then can get a 5 game ban straight off the back of the previous one, absolutely ludicrous

seems like the RFL dont want any RL players on the pitch, cos they'll all be banned constantly, unless they are involved in and start a brawl, but get away with it :)

I can see a potential issue with this new style

Team A has an important game coming up, with players on 5 points.
Is it then better for them to ask said player to foul and get banned earlier than risk waiting till before the big game?

I could be wrong on the way it works and this wont be an issue but as it looks possible to me

I’m still baffled by it. You are repeatedly punished for the same offence. Does anything like it exist in any other domain?

I can't understand how the clubs have gone along with this, without telling the RFL where to stick it!

i'm glad its not just me that thinks this new system is absolutely ridiculous

at least under the old system, and the flaws around consistency, we knew that a player would get grade A-E, get a ban, and then that was that. Yes, after that there may have been an element of you have a had record, so could be charged on the higher end of the grading

however, under this you get punished, then punished again, and again, and again. So we may as well make the game tick rugby and do away with contact altogether

Maybe serving a ban should reduce your points back a bit? But they do time out after 12 months so your points will reduce. Perhaps they should fade about a bit quicker than 12 months. Seems unfair for someone to get 5 matchs and then be cited for something trivial that only gets a point and get another 5 matches!

No, they'd get banned, but if they did anything else before the big match they'd get banned again. The points do not get cancelled. Keiran will be banned now every time he picks up a single point.
