Wigan Warriors early squad news ahead of 'almighty' Hull FC challenge

Post by josie andrews »

Wigan Warriors boss Matt Peet has provided some early squad news ahead of Friday’s ‘almighty’ challenge against Hull FC at the MKM Stadium.

Peet is set to pick from the same 21-player squad from the Super League opener against Leigh Leopards, with Abbas Miski remaining in contention - but not a definite.

The Lebanon international winger is yet to gain any minutes in 2025, having been the last player to report to pre-season training at Robin Park in January after delaying his return to Australia last year. Rising star Zach Eckersley featured on the wing in his absence against the Leopards, partnering Adam Keighran on the right edge.

We’re a few days out yet, but it’s the same 21-man squad,” Peet said. “I was pleased with Zach last week, and I’ll be very confident if he’s in there again.”

Wigan were involved in a record 1-0 scoreline to open the 2025 Super League campaign, with Gareth O’Brien kicking Leigh to a history-making victory in golden point extra time.

Meanwhile, a much-improved Hull FC outfit got the win they deserved over Catalans Dragons in Perpignan, with Peet highlighting their strong defensive-led performance.

“I’ve been particularly impressed by their competitive nature, and their commitment to defend and to fight,” the Wigan boss said. “I think John (Cartwright) will be really proud of that at a starting point, I know I would have been.

“John has put his own stamp on the team and recruited very well, and they got the result last week. Optimism and confidence will be high, and I think we’re going to face an almighty challenge.

Matt Peet fires ‘careful’ caution to Wigan Warriors star following round one disciplinary hit

Adam Keighran was sent to the sin-bin and received a Grade C charge, resulting in five disciplinary points, following the Super League opener between Wigan Warriors and Leigh Leopards.

Wigan Warriors boss Matt Peet has cautioned star centre Adam Keighran on his disciplinary after the Australian ace was sin-binned in the Super League opener against Leigh Leopards. The 27-year-old was sent for 10 in the second half for an illegal shot on Lachlan Lam at the Brick Community Stadium.

He was later hit with a Grade C charge by the match review panel on Monday, resulting in five points - alongside Wakefield Trinity star Mason Lino, with six-to-11 points the first to result in a ban (one match).

"I've had a chat with him and he needs to be careful there. We want him to be more careful,” Peet told media on Tuesday when asked about the incident. “I understand that it was a reaction to a kick and his timing was off, but we need to be better.”

Peet admits he is a fan of the new points-based system introduced by the Rugby Football League ahead of the 2025 Super League season, aimed at suspending repeat offenders.

A total of 14 players were charged by the MRP on Monday, with players to accumulate those points over a period of 12 months. All Super League stars started the new campaign on zero.

The Wigan boss added: “I like it, looking at it this week, the Grade Cs stay on the field, they get a fine but then the cards matter because if they get another one, they're going to miss (at least) a game.

“I think it's fair. If you look at Adam's tackle and the (Mason) Lino one, I'm not sure that they deserve to miss a game off one but I can see that the way it's scored, you wouldn't want to see a player doing that repeatedly. They would deserve to miss a game if they did.”

If its the same 21 man squad, its this:

1 Jai Field
2 Abbas Miski
3 Adam Keighran
4 Jake Wardle
5 Liam Marshall
6 Bevan French
7 Harry Smith
10 Luke Thompson
11 Junior Nsemba
12 Liam Farrell
13 Kaide Ellis
15 Patrick Mago
16 Liam Byrne
17 Kruise Leeming
19 Tyler Dupree
20 Harvie Hill
21 Sam Walters
22 Zach Eckersley
23 Tom Forber
24 Jack Farrimond
27 Harvey Makin

If Miski is fit that would give us better go forward and maybe a bit of flexibility on the bench?

We shouldn't be concerned about how many they do/don't have available, we need to focus on ourselves and playing how we know we can, do that and we will be okay

By who?
Hull by informing of injuries or Matty giving his squad details two days before required?

Don't underestimate the effect of what Matty did with that early squad release!
