Matt Peet gives verdict on Golden Point and Captain’s Challenge following Super League Round One

MATT PEET ‘understands’ why rugby league has Golden Point, despite his side coming out on the wrong side of it in Round One’s Super League opener at the hands of Leigh Leopards.

The Warriors went down 1-0 to Leigh in the record-breaking fixture with the two sides locked at 0-0 after 80 minutes for the first time in Super League history.

Some people felt that both sides deserved a point with clamouring for the rule to be changed so that each side received one point after an 80-minute draw and that the Golden Point victor takes home another point.

In response to his own opinion on Golden Point, Peet said: “I understand why the game does it but I see pros and cons of both sides.”

In terms of the Captain’s Challenge, Peet believes that the ruling will be used better as the year goes on after every challenge from Super League sides at the weekend were unsuccessful.

“We had discussed using the Captain’s Challenge during pre-season and during last week but across Super League you saw that they were all unsuccessful.

“I think players will learn more on the go. I would have liked to have seen us use it later in the game but I like players using their instincts.

“We need to strike a balance with it.”

Its funny to see the players telling the ref how wrong he is, and then not challenging! And then even when they do, they're wrong.

Not saying the refs get everything right, but just its amusing how fallible the players are when they've been telling the ref how crap he is all game.

BTW I'd have a spotter on half way for kick offs waving a flag or something if the kicking teams goes off side (because they usually do). Then we can let the ball go out and challenge the call of not offside and get a penalty.

I couldn't believe the rubbish I was hearing on commentary from Sky (Wire game). "They'll have to adapt; it's new to them", etc. What a load of rubbish! They've been coached in it. Have they never watched an NRL game? Here's a few tips. For a start, don't pee away your challenge in the first ten minutes unless you're 110% sure you're going to win it.

Should never be used for anything in the first half unless it's giving 6 again inside our 30 and it's sin bin or sending off is wrong. Our defence is unreal.

Second half only used if it's game changing situation. Knock on high shot etc.

We used that on Thursday stupidly it basically cost us the game.

i only saw 4 challenges at weekend and all were lost

Wigan IMO were stupid, and Keighran must surely have been able to say to Faz, on i had my hands all over the ball as it looked pretty blatent.

they are going to have to be smart as to when to use it as others have said, and maybe even tactical to save it, unless it is a really blatant error in the 1st half

Mike, sitting as I do almost on the halfway line, I think the bit about the kickoff is brilliant!

Ive always said this about challenging.Be very sure before you do challenge.Im almost certain some players do it just to prove the ref wrong.Its also only worth challenging if its a critical point of the game or in a critical position.Common sense prevails

Utterly pointless addition to the game the challenge to me the ref gets most things right let the game flow and stop with this crap,it works,just about in the NRL because they have floods of cameras seemingly for every angle going our game doesn’t.

Warrington challenge showed how ill thought out it is get rid and let the game flow

I've said the same for ages. It works OK in the NRL, but their camera tech is so much better than ours.

I'm happy enough to give it a go this season and see how things work out, it only takes one decision to be overturned and for it to make a massive difference to a game, for it to be hailed a great success.

It's here so lets get on with it and support it for now, if it helps to improve the game then great, if it also leads to getting more cameras at games, even better.

Players will hopefully get better at using it as the season goes on, at least we can say we were the first team ever in the UK to use it, another note in the history books.
