Hull FC swoop to sign Wigan Warriors forward
Harvie Hill to Hull
It's been reported that Harvie Hill is going to Hull next season.

With the rumours about Byrne going to Warrington as well, presumably we are looking at recruitments?

First off this nonsense of announcing deals so early frankly ridiculous and we need to go back to the way it was look at the Byrne deal utter madness.
As for Hill it’s an odd one I’m not happy after all the work Wigan have put into him off he goes to another club possibly to reap the rewards and all we get from Wigan is silence Christ they couldn’t shut up about vegas but in important matters such as player retention etc nothing

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Surprised and disappointed by this one. More disappointed than losing Byrne because Liam has had more opportunity to prove himself and the coaching staff should have a greater understanding of his true ability and potential. Younger players today seem to have a greater sense of their worth on the open market even if we as fans find it difficult to take when we lose a player that the club has developed. Look at young Nicolson at Canberra. We may have thought that he had 'ideas above his station' but look at him now, you can't say he hasn't done well for himself. Does anybody know if the coaching staff knew that Hill was intending to leave? We can't replace both him and Byrne with younger players coming through without weakening the squad in the short term so let's hope we take the chance to strengthen by signing a really good prop for next season. Byrne is playing solidly this season but nothing more than that so we should be looking to do better. I'm concerned that both Chan and Eseh don't seem to be making the progress that we would hope for and at present wouldn't want either of them being seen as Byrne's replacement unless they improve considerably this season. Hull got a good look at Chan last season and yet have opted for Hill next season. I'm still hoping that Sam makes the grade but time is running out.

Re: Harvey Hill
I don't think Hill has really kicked on as expected. His early appearances showed promise. I thought last year was a step back and he started to look a bit sluggish. Then he was our best performer in pre-season but his 2 appearances this year have been a bit lacklustre.
In the past I think we've got a bit too attached to our homegrown forwards. I've said it plenty of times about props but those who excel at a young age are few and far between and generally have shown it quite early. The others tend to take a long time to really mature and often only start to hit their peak in their mid-20's.
I don't know if he was keen to leave or whether we didn't really offer what he wanted (or if we offered anything at all) but this isn't one that I'm devastated about as long as we're actively looking to recruit better for next year. We certainly need to be looking to get rid of Chan and Eseh.
It's also worth considering that Ellis might move back to prop sooner rather than later if Taylor Kerr continues to impress. Ellis is contracted until the end of next season (I'd be looking to tie him down for longeer) and if Kerr does make the first team then it's another middle to compete with.

It's about a current Wigan player. Surely that makes it more appropriate for the main forum?

Re: Hull FC swoop to sign Wigan Warriors forward
Could be a cap issue i.e. he thinks he's worth more money than the club can afford to pay him under the SC. Walters offers cover in the second row as well as prop so is useful to have on the bench.. Hill is an out and out prop.
Kerr reminds me of a young Phil Clarke and I see him as LF 3 or 4 years down the line.
Maybe we are clearing the way for Sutton to return?

Re: Hull FC swoop to sign Wigan Warriors forward
Looking at the impact Sam Walters has had at prop in the past 4 games he's put himself ahead of Harvie in my opinion - and previously we had been playing him much more as a 2nd row rather than mix of prop and 2nd row. So maybe not quite as big a loss for next season as he might have been.
Still, a shame he is off as he'll come into his prime in the next year or so. I imagine he has a good contract so fair play to the lad. It must be quite hard when you're not getting chances to play on a regular basis. I imagin Makin will fill the gap Harvie leaves.
It does highlight the challenges we have in keeping such a good crop of young players happy while we also have a relatively young 1st 17. Players like Douglas will be looking for 1st team time this season. Interesting to see how that plays out.

"Could be a cap issue", we need to sort things out, w**ky Warrington don't seem to have issues with a salary cap, just keep signing players like Sneyd, who will be on big moneydoc wrote: ↑Tue Mar 18, 2025 5:42 pm Could be a cap issue i.e. he thinks he's worth more money than the club can afford to pay him under the SC.
